The 2021 Netflix series Canine Intervention, starring Oakland dog trainer Jas Leverette, drew competing petitions: one urged Netflix to cancel it over training methods its organizers called inhumane; another asked the service to bring it back, praising what its organizers described as a gentle, reward-based approach. Those are the petitioners’ opposing claims, not independent findings about every method shown in the series.
What the controversy was about
Canine Intervention follows Leverette as he works with dogs and their owners. Netflix identifies it as a 2021 title and presents a Season 1 trailer on its official title page. The series was the subject of an August 31, 2021 BGR report about fans organizing against it.
The dispute centered on how the show portrayed dog training. The cancellation petition objected to methods it characterized as inhumane and cited choke collars, prong collars, and electric shock collars. A competing petition described Leverette’s approach as gentle, highlighting daily practice, praise, and rewards. These descriptions reflect the campaigns’ positions; they should not be treated as a comprehensive or independently verified account of the training in every episode.

The cancellation petition and renewal petition are campaigns, not polls of Netflix viewers. Their signature totals show support for those requests on Change.org, not what all viewers thought or whether Netflix acted on them.

How the petitions fit with veterinary guidance
The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB) recommends reward-based methods for dog training, including behavior problems. Its current position statement says: “Based on current scientific evidence, AVSAB recommends that only reward-based training methods are used for all dog training, including the treatment of behavior problems.” AVSAB’s 2025 board statement advises against aversive methods, including electronic collars, prong collars, choke chains, leash corrections, and other physical or psychological punishment. That professional recommendation is distinct from the claims made by either petition. It provides context for why training methods can be contentious, but it does not establish what was used in every scene of Canine Intervention.

Is there a second season?
BGR reported in 2021 that the six-episode series had not yet been approved for a second season. Netflix’s title page presents the Season 1 trailer. These sources do not establish a definitive current renewal or cancellation decision, so the petitions’ requests should not be mistaken for confirmation of the show’s status.
