When Kamala Harris selected Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate on August 6, 2024, fans seized on his public references to Taylor Swift and Beyoncé—and his support for ticket-price transparency—to call him a “Swiftie VP.” The labels were fan shorthand, not evidence of formal membership in either fandom.
Why was Tim Walz called a Swiftie?
Harris announced Walz as her running mate and introduced him at a Philadelphia rally on August 6, 2024, setting off a wave of online attention around the governor’s pop-culture connections. The Washington Post’s account of the selection places the nickname in that political moment.
Rolling Stone Canada reported that fans highlighted Walz’s references to Swift and his support for greater transparency in online ticket pricing. One point of connection was Minnesota House File 1989, which the publication described as addressing hidden fees and ticket-price transparency. The number 1989 also happens to be the title of one of Swift’s albums, helping make “Swiftie VP” an easy fan-made label. This is the connection described in the report, not proof that the bill was created as a tribute to Swift or that Walz belongs to her official fan community.
What did Walz do to earn Beyoncé fan comparisons?
Rolling Stone Canada reported that Walz proclaimed July 20, 2023, “Beyoncé Day” in Minnesota, timed to Beyoncé’s Renaissance tour stop in the state. The proclamation drew enthusiastic responses from fans, who folded the gesture into the same playful fandom conversation.

The reported Swift- and Beyoncé-related actions were different: the Swift association centered on ticket-fee advocacy and proclamations, while the Beyoncé reference was the state’s commemorative day. In both cases, “Swiftie” and “Beyhive” were informal fan interpretations—not confirmed memberships.
What were the “Taylor Swift Days” in Minnesota?
Walz proclaimed two days in June 2023 as “Taylor Swift Days” around the Eras Tour’s Minnesota stop, according to Rolling Stone Canada’s report on the fan reaction. The publication also noted Walz’s tributes to Prince and Bruce Springsteen, support for Minnesota music, and interest in vinyl, suggesting his music references were not limited to Swift and Beyoncé.

How did Taylor Swift’s later endorsement fit in?
Swift’s endorsement of Harris and Walz came later, after the September 10, 2024, presidential debate. It was a separate development from the reaction to Walz’s selection as the running mate in August. In a September 12 report, TIME said Walz responded on live television: “I am incredibly grateful to Taylor Swift. I say that also as a cat owner—a fellow cat owner.” The campaign also offered Harris-Walz friendship bracelets as a way to make campaign donations, TIME reported. TIME’s account of the endorsement and campaign bracelets covers that later episode.
