What happened at Amy Schumer’s Tampa show?
Schumer performed at Amalie Arena on a Sunday, two days before the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Her set moved from raunchy comedy into political subjects, including the election and gun control, according to The Guardian and The Washington Post.
She called then-Republican nominee Donald Trump an “orange, sexual-assaulting, fake-college-starting monster.” She also invited a Trump supporter onstage to explain his support. Accounts of the exchange say he pointed to distrust of Hillary Clinton; Schumer challenged him about whether he was concerned by Trump’s impulsiveness. Some people in the audience booed.
The joke’s sexual-assault wording was made amid renewed attention to a 2005 recording of Trump making vulgar remarks about women, which had become public earlier that month. Schumer’s line was her own political joke, not a quotation from the recording. The Washington Post covered that context.

Why did people leave?
The immediate flashpoint was the political discussion and Schumer’s criticism of Trump. When people booed, she told the audience, “Of course, we’re in Florida, you’re going to boo. I know you’re here to laugh, but you choose how you’re going to live your life, and it’s just too important,” according to The Guardian. Contemporary reports differ in how they describe her response to continuing heckling: The Washington Post, relaying the Tampa Bay Times, reported that she said people who yelled out would be thrown out; CBS’s Associated Press account said she asked security to escort persistent booers out.
Another possible backdrop was Schumer’s earlier book, The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo, which described Tampa as “horrendous” and joked about its residents. The Guardian and TIME noted the passage, but contemporary coverage did not establish that it caused anyone to leave. It should be treated as possible context, not a proven explanation. How many people walked out?
Contemporary coverage relayed the Tampa Bay Times’ estimate that roughly 200 people left. TIME described that number as about 1% of the arena’s capacity. The Tampa Bay Times also estimated at least 10,000 attendees, while Schumer later said that 8,400 people stayed. These figures come from different reported estimates and a statement by Schumer; they are not an audited, reconciled count of attendance or departures. The numbers are reported by The Guardian, TIME, The Washington Post, and CBS/Associated Press.

Two days later, at Madison Square Garden in New York, Schumer read a sarcastic open letter addressing the Tampa reaction. She said, “Dearest Tampa, I’m sorry you didn’t want me, a comedian who talks about what she believes in, to mention the biggest thing going on in our country right now,” then mock-apologized: “I will never again say that he is an orange, sexual-assaulting, fake-college-starting monster.” The Guardian reported the remarks.

In a statement quoted by Entertainment Weekly and reported by the Guardian, Schumer said, “I loved the crowd and my show in Tampa last night! I want to thank the 8,400 people who stayed. We had a great time!” That is her account of the show, not an independent measure of how the audience felt. The Guardian covered the statement.
