In July 2025, some Etsy buyers and sellers called for a boycott after merchandise branded “Alligator Alcatraz” appeared on the marketplace. They argued that some products conflicted with Etsy’s policy on degrading content aimed at protected classes. That was the boycotters’ interpretation—not a reported finding that Etsy had violated its policy.
What prompted the boycott calls?
The backlash centered on products using the name “Alligator Alcatraz,” a nickname associated with a Florida immigration detention facility. A subset of Etsy buyers and sellers objected to merchandise carrying the branding and urged people to leave or stop using the marketplace. TechCrunch reported on July 22, 2025, that the effort was organized loosely on social media, including Threads and Reddit, with references on X, TikTok, and Facebook. Some sellers threatened to close their shops, while some buyers said they were closing their accounts. TechCrunch’s July 22 report
What was the policy dispute?
According to TechCrunch, Etsy’s published Discrimination and Hateful Content Policy listed immigration status as a protected class. Boycotters argued that some “Alligator Alcatraz” products contained degrading commentary directed at protected classes and therefore should not have been allowed under that policy.
The distinction matters: the coverage documents users’ allegation, not a formal policy decision, legal ruling, or finding by Etsy that the listings violated its rules. TechCrunch said Etsy had not responded to its multiple requests for comment by the time of publication.

What merchandise was reported?
The July 2025 reporting described T-shirts, hats, mugs, stickers, and patches. The products were not unique to Etsy: TechCrunch also named Amazon, eBay, and Shopify as platforms where similar merchandise could be found. The Promotional Products Association International separately reported on July 29, 2025, that Florida GOP merchandise included T-shirts, hats, and other promotional products. How many people joined, and did the boycott affect Etsy?
There is no verified participant total in the reported coverage. TechCrunch described the effort as difficult to measure because it was loosely organized. The report also noted that Appfigures data showed Etsy’s U.S. iOS app remained in the Shopping category’s top 20 throughout July 2025. That app-store ranking is not a count of boycott participants, a measure of Etsy sales, or evidence that the protest had no effect.
