Ethan Hawke said Lorenz Hart’s height shaped how others treated him—and how Hart tried to make himself heard. At a post-screening Q&A at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival, Hawke described the challenge of playing the Broadway lyricist in Richard Linklater’s Blue Moon: “The challenge is understanding the way the world looks at each one of us differently, and so much of our self-esteem is rooted in how we think other people view us, which is very difficult,” followed by, “People are heightist! I mean, they really are.”
What Hawke meant by “People are heightist”
Hawke’s remark was an interpretation of how stature affected Hart’s experience, not a claim backed by a population study. In Nick Romano’s Entertainment Weekly report, syndicated by AOL, Hawke said Hart’s height was a substantial part of his personality and of his experience of being ignored. The report described Hart as widely regarded as barely five feet tall; it did not establish an independently verified measurement.

Hawke also connected Hart’s nonstop talking to a need to be seen and heard, rather than simply a wish to dominate a room. As Hawke put it: “When Rick and I were first working on this, it was like, you have to understand he’s not talking so much because he’s trying to dominate other people. He’s talking so much because he needs you to see him.”
How the film frames Hart’s story
Blue Moon, directed by Richard Linklater, is set in 1943, on the night Oklahoma! opens on Broadway. Romano’s report says almost all of the film takes place at Sardi’s, a New York City bar. Hawke discussed the role at a TIFF post-screening Q&A with Linklater and co-stars Bobby Cannavale, who plays the bartender, and Andrew Scott, who plays Richard Rodgers. The report says Hart and Rodgers had fallen out before the events depicted.

The report says the film draws on real letters between Hart and Elizabeth Weiland, while Hawke characterized the romantic fixation portrayed in the film as fictional. That distinction matters: a film’s dramatic rendering and an actor’s explanation of a character do not amount to a complete account of Hart’s private life.
What is established about Hart—and what is not
Romano’s report describes Rodgers and Hart as collaborators on 28 stage musicals and more than 500 songs — figures attributed here to the Entertainment Weekly report by Nick Romano, 2025. The film’s title comes from one of Hart’s best-known songs, according to the same report.

The available account supports what Hawke said about his acting choices and how the film presents Hart. It does not independently verify Hart’s height, establish a statistical case about height discrimination, or serve as a full biography. Hawke was reported as 5-foot-10; the comparison with Hart’s reported stature helped explain the physical contrast he considered while playing the role.
