Emma Watson says paparazzi crowded the London party for her 18th birthday in 2008, making it difficult to leave. She recalled that one photographer lay on the pavement to take a picture up her skirt. The next day, she said, she felt violated. Years later, she described the incident as an example of how tabloids treated her transition to womanhood differently from that of her male Harry Potter co-stars.
What Watson said happened at the party
In an interview published by Teen Vogue in 2009, Watson said the paparazzi presence was so heavy that she “literally couldn’t get out the door at the end of the night.” She identified the photographer lying on the pavement to take an upskirt picture as the worst part of the experience. The interview material was republished by Emma Watson Updates on June 22, 2009, and identifies the feature as an August 2009 Teen Vogue interview: Emma Watson Updates’ republication.
A separate 2009 interview, republished by Emma Watson Updates from the Daily Mail, gives her immediate reaction: “I woke up the next day and felt completely violated by it all.” Watson also said the photographers were trying to get a picture of her looking drunk and described turning 18 as the point at which she became “fair game.” The republication is dated January 31, 2009: Emma Watson Updates’ republication of the interview.
Why she connected it to her gender
In a 2016 conversation with Forest Whitaker during HeForShe Arts Week, Watson recalled that the pictures appeared on the front of English tabloids the next morning. She contrasted the scrutiny she faced as she became a woman with the press treatment of her male co-stars, Dan Radcliffe and Rupert Grint. “Obviously Dan [Radcliffe] and Rupert [Grint], who were my male co-stars, don’t wear skirts but I think that’s just one example of how my transition to womanhood was dealt very differently by the tabloid press than it was for my male colleagues,” she said. The Independent reported the conversation on March 10, 2016: The Independent’s report.

Watson also said the photographs would have been illegal if published 24 hours earlier. That is her statement about the timing; the cited reporting does not independently establish the applicable legal rule or its scope, so it should not be read as a general legal conclusion.

A 2017 Vanity Fair profile adds a journalist’s own recollection that photographers outside the party had a bounty for a picture up Watson’s skirt. That detail belongs to the profile writer’s account, not to a direct Watson quotation, and is contextual recollection rather than an official record: Vanity Fair’s profile.
