Emilio Estevez told his younger brother Charlie Sheen that Tom Cruise would play the lead in Born on the Fourth of July, Sheen has recalled. Estevez reportedly began the phone call by asking whether Sheen was sitting down. The story concerns the 1989 film—not a current Cruise project—and Sheen’s account does not establish that he had been formally cast.
What Emilio Estevez told Charlie Sheen
In a 2025 interview with Graham Bensinger, Sheen recalled discussing the lead role in Oliver Stone’s Born on the Fourth of July. He said Stone had told him he wanted him for the film, and that they had meetings and dinner with Ron Kovic, whose autobiography the film was based on. Sheen said he later stopped hearing from Stone, tried to contact him, and was told Stone was in Cuba.
Sheen said the casting news came instead from his brother Emilio Estevez. As Sheen recounted it, Estevez called and asked, “Hey, man. You sitting down?” before telling him Cruise was doing the film. The call itself is known through Sheen’s recollection as reported in interviews; the available accounts do not independently document the conversation or the sequence of production discussions.
Was Charlie Sheen officially cast?
Sheen said he did not sign a contract. He recalled a handshake and described feeling let down, but that is not evidence of a signed deal or formal casting. His phrasing, quoted by The Independent, captures the distinction: “You can’t lose something you never had.”

The story is therefore best understood as Sheen’s account of being considered and of feeling that the role had been within reach—not as a confirmed case of a contracted actor being replaced.
Sheen had told the story before
The anecdote was in print well before the 2025 interview coverage. A digitized 1993 Us interview records Sheen saying that Emilio called to ask, “Are you sitting down? Cruise is doing Born on the Fourth,” and that he wished he had heard the news directly from Stone. In that interview, Sheen said, “I just wish I could’ve heard it from him.” The scanned source has imperfect text recognition, so the exact wording and punctuation should be treated cautiously.

The 2025 account is thus a retelling of a story Sheen had already shared publicly by 1993, rather than the first known emergence of the anecdote.
What happened after Cruise got the role?
Cruise played Ron Kovic in the 1989 film. Although Sheen recalled feeling hurt by how he learned the news, the 2025 report also says he later praised Cruise’s performance and believed Cruise should have won the Oscar. That context makes the story more complicated than a simple account of an enduring feud between the actors.

A separate later account of the brothers
In November 2025, Netflix Tudum reported that documentary director Andrew Renzi said Estevez and Martin Sheen declined to appear on camera in aka Charlie Sheen so Charlie could have the moment. Renzi said they supported the project and were close. That decision is separate from the earlier casting call; it does not explain why Estevez delivered the news about Born on the Fourth of July.
