Reports describe widespread local cancellations—not a confirmed formal ban covering the entire state. In neighbouring Chandigarh, screenings went ahead.
Why did Sikh groups protest Emergency?
The SGPC said the film portrayed Sikh characters wrongly and said it had already registered objections. The committee had also asked Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann to ban the film. These are the SGPC’s stated allegations; the reports do not independently establish whether the portrayal was accurate.
On January 17, SGPC chief secretary Kulwant Singh Mannan told The Indian Express: “The SGPC will not allow this film to be screened in Punjab under any circumstances.” The committee said it ended its demonstrations after cinema managers decided not to show the film.
Was the film banned across Punjab?
The available reporting establishes cancellations at many theatres and, in Mohali, a reported local verbal instruction to cinema owners. It does not establish a formal statewide government ban. The distinction matters: protests, decisions by individual cinema operators and reported local administrative directions are not the same as a statewide legal order.

Hindustan Times reported police deployment outside multiplexes in Mohali. Mohali SSP Deepak Pareek said 150 personnel had been deployed outside various multiplexes there, and the report said no untoward incidents were reported. Ranaut described the cancellations as “complete harassment of art and the artist” in a post on X, as quoted by The Indian Express. That was the actor and filmmaker’s characterization of the cancellations, rather than a neutral description of the theatre decisions.
