Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden announced them as recipients on January 30, 2024; the prize was presented at a tribute concert in Washington, D.C., on March 20.
Why were Elton John and Bernie Taupin honored?
The Gershwin Prize recognizes achievement and influence in popular song. The Library of Congress says it honors creative work that is collected, preserved, made accessible and valued by the national library. Named for George and Ira Gershwin, the prize celebrates John and Taupin’s lasting contribution as a songwriting team. The Library’s announcement described their partnership and the award’s purpose.

How did their songwriting partnership work?
John and Taupin met in 1967 and developed a method that allowed them to create together while usually working separately. Taupin wrote lyrics and sent them to John, who composed music at the piano. The Library’s account of the ceremony describes Taupin as the lyricist and John as the composer.
John called the chance to share success with his longtime collaborator “the greatest thing you can ever have,” according to the Library’s report. Taupin, reflecting on his connection to the United States, said, “I have an American heart, an American soul.”

What happened at the 2024 tribute concert?
The March 20 ceremony at Washington’s Constitution Hall brought together performers from across musical genres to interpret songs from John and Taupin’s catalogue. The Library’s report names Metallica, Annie Lennox, Garth Brooks, Brandi Carlile, Billy Porter, Jacob Lusk, Maren Morris, Charlie Puth and Joni Mitchell among the artists who took part.
Performances included “Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding,” “Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word,” “Madman Across the Water,” “Bennie and the Jets,” “I Guess That’s Why They Call It the Blues” and “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me.” John performed “Your Song” with Taupin beside the piano. Hayden described the award as “the nation’s highest award for influence, impact and achievement in popular music.”

How many records did John and Taupin sell?
In its March 22, 2024 report, the Library of Congress said the pair had sold “some 300 million records.” That is the Library’s approximate figure, not an audited sales total.
