On Oct. 1, 2018, Elon Musk shared the music video for Naughty by Nature’s “O.P.P.” on Twitter, captioning it “Naughty by Nature” with a winking emoji. The post drew attention because it came shortly after Musk agreed to settle the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s case over his earlier Tesla tweets. The timing invited speculation, but the available accounts do not establish what Musk intended.
What did Musk post?
Musk shared a link to Naughty by Nature’s “O.P.P.” video and wrote “Naughty by Nature” alongside a winking emoji. BGR reported the post on Oct. 1, 2018, and the Los Angeles Times also recounted it later that week.

The post was reported early Monday. An AFP-based report carried by The New Indian Express put it at approximately 1:22 a.m. California time; that is a reported estimate, not a verified timestamp from Musk.
Why did the timing attract attention?
The SEC case concerned Musk’s Aug. 7, 2018 tweets about taking Tesla private, including his statement that funding was “secured.” News coverage described the agency as alleging securities fraud. The “O.P.P.” video was not the subject of that case; it was notable because Musk posted it just after agreeing to settle.

As reported by the Los Angeles Times on Oct. 4, the proposed settlement included a $20 million personal penalty for Musk, his relinquishing Tesla’s chairmanship, the appointment of two independent directors, and review or oversight of certain company-related communications. At the time of that report, a judge had not yet decided whether to approve the settlement.
What did the post mean?
Some contemporary commentary and readers wondered whether the caption, the wink, or the song was a jab at the SEC or a reference to the settlement. Those were interpretations, not established explanations. The contemporaneous reports cited here do not confirm Musk’s motive, and the caption itself does not spell one out.

A later complaint in Gharrity v. Musk, filed in 2021, also recounts the post and settlement terms. A complaint is one party’s pleading, not a court finding about why Musk posted the video or what legal significance the post had.

On Oct. 4, Musk separately tweeted about the SEC, calling it the “Shortseller Enrichment Commission” and praising its work and name change. The Los Angeles Times reproduced the wording as “Just want to that the Shortseller Enrichment Commission is doing incredible work. And the name change is so on point!” The paper printed “that” as written; it appears to be a typo. This later tweet is distinct from the “Naughty by Nature” post and should not be treated as proof of what the earlier one meant.
