Asmongold suggested Musk might have paid someone to level the account, but that was an accusation—not an established fact. The argument then spilled onto X, where Musk criticized Asmongold and shared private messages between them.
Who was the streamer?
The streamer in the January 2025 story was Asmongold, the online name of Zach Hoyt. This is the dispute covered by Gizmodo on January 16, 2025, and explained the same day by Forbes; it is not a dispute with Hasan Piker.
What started the argument?
Musk had streamed Path of Exile 2 using a high-level character and rank. Players questioned whether his gameplay appeared consistent with that standing. Asmongold criticized Musk’s play and suggested the account might have been leveled by someone else.
That suggestion remained an allegation. Forbes reported that Asmongold’s video did not provide direct evidence that Musk had paid a booster or that another person had played the account. The reporting establishes the criticism and suspicion, not who actually leveled the character.

How did the dispute escalate?
After Asmongold’s comments, Musk unfollowed him on X and publicly criticized his gaming ability. Musk also removed Asmongold’s X checkmark and shared private messages in which the two had discussed Asmongold’s editors, according to Gizmodo and Forbes.
Asmongold responded by challenging Musk to stream a full campaign to show that he had played through the game himself. That was Asmongold’s proposed test; it was not independent verification of who had played the account.

How this differs from the Musk–Hasan Piker disputes
Later headlines about Musk and Hasan Piker describe separate episodes. In March 2025, Piker and Ubisoft mocked Musk after he called Piker a fraud and sellout over Piker’s promotion of Assassin’s Creed Shadows; jokes about Musk’s Path of Exile 2 account also surfaced in that exchange, according to The Standard’s March 26 report.
A separate August 2026 dispute concerned Musk’s response to resurfaced remarks by Piker and Musk’s criticism of Twitch moderation as a “double standard.” That account comes from International Business Times UK’s report of August 11, 2026; it is distinct from the 2025 Asmongold argument.
