The reporting rests on two different kinds of evidence, and they carry different weight: an anonymously sourced first report from November 2024, and DeGeneres’s own later account, relayed secondhand, from 2025.
What the first report said
The earliest detailed account came from TMZ on November 20, 2024. It said the couple had settled in the Cotswolds and that Trump’s win was the driving force. Its sources described the couple as “very disillusioned” by the result and said they decided “to get the hell out.” These are unnamed-source claims. The report did not carry a statement from either spouse, and the phrase should be attributed to TMZ’s sources rather than quoted as the couple’s own words. TMZ, November 20, 2024
The Los Angeles Times repeated the “get the hell out” language on the same day, but as reported language rather than a direct quote from the couple. Los Angeles Times, November 20, 2024 Vanity Fair reported that representatives had not immediately replied to its request for comment. Nothing in that coverage amounted to an official announcement from the couple. Vanity Fair, November 21, 2024
DeGeneres’s own account
The clearest first-person explanation came in July 2025. As reported by The Daily Beast, DeGeneres described arriving in the UK the day before the election, with the house intended as a part-time base. They woke to messages from friends reacting to the result, and that is when they decided to stay. The Daily Beast attributed the following words to DeGeneres speaking with broadcaster Richard Bacon at a 2025 event:

“We got here the day before the election and woke up to lots of texts from our friends with crying emojis, and I was like, ‘He got in.’ And we’re like, ‘We’re staying here.'”
Because this account reached readers through a secondhand report, treat the wording as The Daily Beast’s rendering of the event rather than a verified transcript. The Daily Beast, July 21, 2025

Buying the house and deciding to stay are different events
TMZ reported that the couple bought the Cotswolds property before the election. That sequence matters. On this account, the result did not lead them to buy a house in England. It changed what they intended to do with a house they already had, turning a part-time residence into a permanent one. The reporting supports that narrower framing better than the common shorthand that Trump’s win caused the move.
A later property change, with a different cause
In July 2025, The Independent reported on a sale of a different UK property, a farm, through a statement supplied via Sotheby’s International Realty and attributed to DeGeneres. The statement said the couple needed horse facilities and pasture once they decided to live in the UK full time. That explains a later housing decision inside the UK. It does not explain why they left the United States. The Independent, July 22, 2025

Property plans have changed more than once, and the record is incomplete. A Realtor.com report from May 5, 2026 said the couple had reversed plans to sell the UK farmhouse and described planning documents that referred to it as a long-term home. That is secondary reporting based on planning paperwork. It does not establish their exact residence, and it does not confirm the final outcome of the planning matters. As of October 2026, the most accurate statement is that they have said they intend to live in the UK full time, and the details of their property arrangements are still being reported. What the reporting does not establish
The Los Angeles Times coverage also discussed DeGeneres’s recently released Netflix special and the workplace allegations connected to the end of her talk show. Those matters are part of her career context. The reporting does not show that either was a reason for the move, and they should not be presented as one. Los Angeles Times, November 20, 2024

The short version
The best-supported explanation is that the result of the 2024 U.S. election turned a planned part-time stay in England into a full-time one. The couple had already bought the property, and the anonymously sourced phrase “get the hell out” should be attributed to the source who used it. DeGeneres’s later account confirms the core sequence in her own words, though only through secondhand reporting. The later UK property decisions are a separate matter, and reporting on where they currently live is still incomplete.
