Ed Sheeran’s explanation was that Adele’s musical identity was so strong he did not want to interfere with it. In a November 2021 radio interview, he also said she did not really collaborate with other artists. That was Sheeran’s view—not a reason Adele herself gave.
What Ed Sheeran said about collaborating with Adele
Sheeran made the comments on WKTU’s Carolina with Greg T in the Morning Show while promoting his album Equals. Just Jared’s November 8, 2021 report quoted him saying Adele “doesn’t really collab with anyone,” then explaining: “Her thing is so good that like you don’t want to mess with that.” Just Jared reported the interview and remarks.

In other words, he framed the absence of a duet as admiration, not a falling-out or a lack of respect. The wording describes his perspective on making music with her; it does not establish Adele’s own reasons for not recording with him.
How Sheeran said he knew Adele
Sheeran recalled knowing Adele for about 15 years, an approximate estimate from his own recollection. He said he had seen her perform at small shows when she opened for Jack Peñate, after a family connection to Peñate’s drummer brought him to those gigs. He remembered Adele sitting on a stool and playing bass guitar.

He said they later ran into one another after both had become successful. Sheeran described Adele warmly, noting shared British roots and some things in common, but also said he did not know her “super, super well.” His account suggests a cordial acquaintance, not a close friendship. Female First’s November 9 report and IOL’s November 11 report, credited to Bang Showbiz, also recount these details: Female First and IOL.

The remarks were made in November 2021, when Sheeran was promoting Equals and Adele’s album 30 and single “Easy on Me” were part of the news cycle. Those details place the comments in their original context; they are not current release updates.
The reports document Sheeran’s explanation at that time. They do not quote Adele explaining whether or why she would collaborate with him, and they do not establish the artists’ complete collaboration history through today. The three reports repeat substantially the same interview comments, so they should be understood as coverage of one conversation rather than three separate interviews.
