Why EA Hasn’t Made Star Wars Battlefront 3—and Why It May Not Have To

EA has not announced Star Wars Battlefront 3. A reported DICE pitch was allegedly rejected because the licensed game would need roughly 20% higher sales than an equivalent EA-owned title, while EA now has other Star Wars and multiplayer priorities.

EA has not announced Star Wars Battlefront 3, and the best-supported explanation is financial rather than a lack of fan interest. A former DICE developer reportedly said the studio pitched a sequel, but EA rejected it because the licensed game would have needed to sell roughly 20% more copies than an equivalent EA-owned title to generate the same return. That is reported industry sourcing—not an official EA quote, a disclosed royalty rate or proof that the series is permanently dead.

EA has not announced Star Wars Battlefront 3, and the best-supported explanation is financial rather than a lack of demand. A former DICE developer reportedly said the studio pitched a third Battlefront, but EA rejected it because the licensed game would have needed to sell roughly 20% more copies than an equivalent EA-owned title to generate the same return.

That reported licensing disadvantage helps explain why EA has not immediately followed Star Wars Battlefront II with a sequel. But it is important to separate evidence from interpretation: EA has not publicly said, “We do not need to make Battlefront 3,” nor has it formally announced that the project was canceled. The defensible conclusion is narrower: Battlefront 3 remains unannounced, and EA has other ways to use its development resources and Star Wars relationship.

Why fans are asking about Battlefront 3 again

The question returned with force in 2025, when Battlefront II experienced a substantial revival. A community-led event known as Resurgence Day helped push the game’s Steam concurrent-user count to approximately 35,000 on June 22, 2025, according to Game Developer’s reporting. That was about three times the January 2021 peak cited in the same report. GamesRadar also reported a sharp rise for Battlefront II on sales charts in May 2025 as calls for a sequel grew.

Those figures demonstrate that the audience is still there. They do not, by themselves, prove that a new premium multiplayer game would be profitable. A Steam concurrent-user figure measures players online at the same time on one platform; it is not a total player count across PlayStation, Xbox and PC, and it is not a forecast of how many people would buy a new game at launch.

Logitech G F310 Wired Gamepad Controller Console - Blue/Black
  • With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
  • Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
  • A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
  • The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
  • The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.

That distinction is central. A revived older game can attract players at a very different cost structure from a new Battlefront. The existing game already has its core technology, maps and systems. A sequel would require years of production, a large team, new content, infrastructure and post-launch support, as well as a new licensing agreement and a commercial plan capable of avoiding the damage caused by the second game’s troubled launch.

The reported reason EA rejected a Battlefront 3 pitch

In 2021, reporter Tom Henderson reported that DICE had pitched Battlefront 3 and that EA turned it down because of the economics of the Star Wars license. The report attributed the information to a former developer, who said the game would need to sell approximately 20% more copies than an equivalent EA-owned project to make the same money.

That is the strongest reported explanation currently available, but it needs to be phrased accurately:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • It is a report based on former-developer sourcing, not an EA financial disclosure.
  • The 20% figure describes the additional sales allegedly required to reach the same financial outcome.
  • It does not establish that Disney receives a fixed 20% royalty.
  • It does not reveal the complete licensing contract, development budget, marketing budget or revenue split.
  • It does not prove that every future Battlefront project would face exactly the same terms.

In practical terms, a licensed game can be less attractive than an internally owned franchise even when both sell well. If EA pays for development and marketing while also sharing part of the commercial upside with a rights holder, the game may need a larger audience to produce the same return as a comparable title built around EA-owned intellectual property.

That is why “20% more sales” should be understood as a reported break-even comparison, not as a royalty-rate headline.

What the EA–Disney arrangement changed

EA and Disney announced a multi-year agreement on May 6, 2013, giving EA exclusive rights to develop and publish core Star Wars games for the period covered by the deal. Disney retained rights in areas including mobile, social, tablet and online categories.

EA subsequently released the 2015 Star Wars Battlefront reboot and Star Wars Battlefront II on November 17, 2017. EA described the sequel as a large multiplayer game spanning all three film eras, with land and space combat, a campaign and modes supporting up to 40 players. Its official feature pages also documented multiplayer, offline Arcade, Instant Action and space-combat options.

The arrangement did not make EA the permanent owner of Star Wars games. The exclusivity period later ended or ceased to cover the whole category, and other publishers began receiving Star Wars projects. That reduced the strategic pressure on EA to make Battlefront its main or only large-scale use of the license.

EA no longer needs Battlefront to represent Star Wars

During the period when EA held broad exclusivity for core Star Wars games, a successful Battlefront sequel could have served as the company’s obvious flagship multiplayer product. The landscape is now more distributed.

In January 2022, EA announced three Star Wars projects connected with Respawn: a sequel to the Jedi series, a first-person shooter and a strategy game. Battlefront 3 was not among them. EA’s known Star Wars strategy has therefore moved toward a portfolio of different genres and studios rather than simply restarting DICE’s multiplayer line.

There is also an opportunity-cost issue inside EA. The company already owns major multiplayer properties including Battlefield and Apex Legends. Those franchises can support large shooter audiences without requiring the same Star Wars licensing economics. A Battlefront sequel would offer a distinctive setting and a powerful brand, but it would compete for teams, investment and live-service attention with businesses EA already controls more directly.

This does not mean EA has no reason to make another Battlefront. It means the game must clear a higher commercial hurdle than its popularity alone might suggest.

Why the 2025 player surge may not be enough

The 2025 revival is meaningful evidence of enthusiasm. It can strengthen the argument that the brand has not been forgotten and that a well-designed sequel could attract attention. But a player spike is only one input into a greenlight decision.

EA would need to estimate at least the following:

  1. Launch sales: How many players would buy a new game at full price rather than return to the older title?
  2. Retention: Would those players remain active for months or years, or would the audience fall after the initial release?
  3. Development cost: How large would the team need to be to deliver modern visuals, maps, classes, vehicles, space combat and cross-platform support?
  4. Live-service cost: What would ongoing servers, updates, testing, moderation and new content cost?
  5. License terms: Would the new agreement produce a better risk-adjusted return than an EA-owned project?
  6. Brand risk: Could EA rebuild trust after the controversy surrounding Battlefront II‘s 2017 launch?
  7. Portfolio fit: Would the game add enough to EA’s shooter and service lineup to justify using a major team?

The renewed interest answers only part of the first question, and even there the evidence is incomplete. It shows that many players are willing to return to an existing game. It does not establish the price they would accept, the launch features they would expect, or their willingness to support another long-running live-service product.

The Battlefront II controversy still matters

Battlefront II ultimately became a much broader game than its launch reputation suggested. It offered a campaign, all three cinematic eras, ground and space combat, multiplayer modes and offline options. EA continues to list and support the game through its official pages.

However, its November 2017 release was dominated by controversy over progression and loot-box mechanics. That history would affect any sequel’s business plan. EA would need to decide how to monetize a new game without repeating the practices that triggered the backlash, while still funding years of post-launch content.

A safer monetization model might reduce revenue per player. A more aggressive model could recreate the reputational risk. Neither problem is solved simply because the original community has become active again.

What you can play now

There is no announced Battlefront 3 to pre-order or track through an official release schedule. For readers who want the current EA version of the experience, Star Wars Battlefront II remains the relevant game to look for on the platform and edition they use. Availability, pricing and physical-versus-digital options vary by region and storefront, so check the listing carefully before buying.

The existing game is also a useful reminder of what fans are actually asking for. Any future sequel would need to deliver that identity while offering enough new content to justify its cost.

Do not confuse this with the older canceled Battlefront III

There are two different projects that are often collapsed into the same rumor. The earlier Star Wars Battlefront III was associated with Free Radical Design and was canceled under LucasArts before EA’s 2015 reboot series. The DICE project discussed in the 2021 report was a separate, later proposal for a sequel to EA’s Battlefront games.

References to a canceled “Battlefront 3” therefore do not automatically describe the same game, studio or business decision.

Could EA still make Battlefront 3?

Yes, in principle. Nothing in the available evidence proves that EA has permanently ruled out every future Battlefront project, that Disney has prohibited EA from making one, or that a secret sequel has been completed. The current evidence supports a more limited statement: no public EA or Lucasfilm Games announcement identifies Battlefront 3 as an announced or active project.

A future sequel could become attractive if licensing terms changed, EA found a lower-cost development model, the company wanted another major multiplayer Star Wars product, or the 2025 resurgence proved durable across platforms rather than remaining concentrated in a short-lived PC spike. The fan campaign may improve the case for the brand, but it does not itself constitute a greenlight.

Bottom line

EA probably has not pursued Star Wars Battlefront 3 because the project appears to offer a difficult risk-reward calculation: a licensed blockbuster would need to sell more than a comparable EA-owned game, require a costly live-service operation and carry the memory of Battlefront II‘s launch controversy. Meanwhile, EA can invest in Jedi, other Respawn projects, Battlefield and Apex Legends, while Disney and Lucasfilm distribute Star Wars games across more publishers.

The 2025 return of Battlefront II proves that the audience remains passionate. It does not prove that EA has changed its financial calculation. So the accurate answer is not that EA officially said it “doesn’t have to” make Battlefront 3; it is that the company has not announced one, and the strongest available reporting points to licensing economics and portfolio priorities as the reasons it may not need to take the risk.

Frequently Asked Questions

Has EA officially canceled Star Wars Battlefront 3?

No. EA has not made a public announcement formally canceling every possible Battlefront 3 project. The game is best described as unannounced, with no reliable public evidence that it is currently in production.

Does Disney take 20% of Battlefront 3 sales?

The 20% figure comes from a report quoting a former developer about the additional sales reportedly needed for the project to make the same money as an equivalent EA-owned game. It is not a confirmed Disney royalty rate.

How many people were playing Battlefront II during its 2025 revival?

The reported 2025 figure was approximately 35,000 concurrent Steam users on June 22, 2025. That measures simultaneous players on Steam, not the total audience across all platforms.

Can you still play Star Wars Battlefront II?

Yes. EA continues to list and support Battlefront II, which includes multiplayer, campaign, offline Arcade, Instant Action and space-combat features. Availability and pricing depend on platform, edition and region.

The Bottom Line

EA has not officially canceled or announced Star Wars Battlefront 3. The strongest reported explanation for its absence is that a licensed sequel would need to sell roughly 20% more copies than an equivalent EA-owned game to make the same money. The 2025 revival of Battlefront II shows renewed demand, but not necessarily the long-term profitability needed to greenlight a sequel.
