The remark is best read as a creative description of DAIMA’s style—not an official announcement that it reboots the story or changes the series’ continuity. The English quotation comes from a fan translation of Japanese Blu-ray commentary, not an official English transcript.
What the directors meant by “a new Dragon Ball”
In commentary associated with the Japanese Blu-ray release, Series Director Aya Komaki reportedly said the team wanted to evoke the past while showing “a new Daima” and “a new Dragon Ball.” The reported comment describes a visual and creative balance: making the series feel fresh without losing the memories and atmosphere associated with earlier Dragon Ball.
The English wording is a fan translation of Japanese commentary, as noted in the secondary report. It should not be treated as a verified official English transcript. The official DAIMA site separately uses “A New World, A New Dragon Ball” as promotional framing; that tagline is not a director quotation.
Does “a new Dragon Ball” mean DAIMA is a reboot?
No reboot announcement follows from this remark. Toei introduced DAIMA as a new anime series with new episodes, and the official series site presents its own premise and credits. Neither official source uses Komaki’s reported wording to declare that DAIMA restarts the franchise, creates a separate timeline, or sits outside continuity.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Likewise, the quotation alone does not settle whether DAIMA is “canon.” It supports a point about the show’s creative presentation, not a formal continuity verdict. Treating a comment about evoking the past and making something feel new as a definitive continuity statement goes beyond what the available official materials say.
What is Dragon Ball DAIMA about?
According to the official Dragon Ball DAIMA site, Goku and his companions are living peacefully when a conspiracy turns them small. They suspect the cause is connected to a place called the Demon Realm, where they encounter a mysterious young Majin named Glorio.

Toei Animation announced DAIMA at New York Comic Con on October 13, 2023, describing it as a new series of new episodes and planning its release for fall 2024. The announcement called it a new, never-before-seen Dragon Ball world and said Akira Toriyama was closely involved. It credited Toriyama with original work, story, character designs, vehicles, monsters and background characters. These details establish DAIMA as a new original anime project; they do not turn the directors’ reported aesthetic comment into a reboot declaration.
Who is behind the series?
The official series credits distinguish the directors’ roles. Yoshitaka Yashima is credited as Director, and Aya Komaki as Series Director. Akira Toriyama is credited for original work, story and character design; Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru for animation character design; and Yuko Kakihara for series composition and scenario.

That context matters when interpreting the remark: Komaki’s reported comment concerns the approach to DAIMA, while the official credits and announcement describe the broader creative team and Toriyama’s substantial involvement.
How does DAIMA differ from earlier Dragon Ball anime?
The grounded distinctions are its framing as a new original series, its premise of shrunken characters, and its move toward the Demon Realm. Komaki’s reported words add a qualified account of the intended relationship to the franchise’s past: familiar memories are evoked, but the presentation is meant to feel new. The sources cited here do not provide a definitive, comprehensive comparison with Dragon Ball Z or Dragon Ball Super.
