On November 5, 2016, Secret Service agents escorted Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump offstage during a campaign rally in Reno, Nevada, after a person near the stage reportedly shouted “gun.” The Secret Service said agents and Reno police apprehended the person, but a search found no weapon. Trump returned a few minutes later and resumed his speech.
What happened at the Reno rally?
The disturbance occurred three days before Election Day. Trump was speaking when security personnel moved him off the stage and officers entered the crowd to apprehend someone near the front. After a brief interruption, Trump came back and continued speaking. Contemporary accounts reported that the rally ended without further incident.
The Secret Service and Reno Police Department were reported to be investigating. At the time, Reno police told ABC News they had been informed of a “medical incident” that precipitated the commotion; the Secret Service described a shouted warning. Those were initial accounts, not a confirmed final explanation of what caused the disturbance.
What did authorities say was found?
In a statement reproduced by ABC News on November 5, 2016, the Secret Service said: “Immediately in front of the stage, an unidentified individual shouted ‘gun.’ Secret Service agents and Reno Police Officers immediately apprehended the subject. Upon a thorough search of the subject and the surrounding area, no weapon was found.” The Associated Press, in a report published by CBS News that day, also reported that no weapon was found.

That account establishes what the agency said about the warning and search at the time; it does not establish what prompted the shout or the disturbance. Initial reports did not provide a definitive account of the cause.
What happened after Trump returned?
Trump thanked the Secret Service and continued his remarks. ABC News reported him saying: “Nobody said it was going to be easy for us. But we will never be stopped. Never ever be stopped. I want to thank the secret service. These guys are fantastic. They don’t get enough credit.”

Was the apprehended person identified or charged?
The contemporaneous reports cited here do not establish the person’s final identity or legal disposition. The Washington Post reported that local accounts said the apprehended man had been released, but its account did not establish a definitive outcome. It would therefore be unsupported to state that the person was charged, convicted, or found guilty.
