Don—Captain Donald Cragen, played by Dann Florek—left the regular Law & Order: SVU cast because the character reached the NYPD’s mandatory retirement age. The show wrote his departure as a retirement from the force, not as a story about Florek’s personal reasons for leaving.
Why did Captain Cragen leave SVU?
Cragen’s retirement was foreshadowed during season 15, when the show discussed the NYPD’s mandatory age limit. In January 2014, the series gave him a farewell episode. TV Guide reported that Cragen was retiring after 15 seasons on SVU and three seasons on the original Law & Order (TV Guide).
TV Guide attributed this explanation of Cragen’s story to Florek: “In the real world, which we try to very hard to simulate, NYPD has mandatory retirement before your 63rd birthday.” That explains the character’s scripted retirement; it does not establish why Florek personally left the regular cast.
Did Dann Florek leave the franchise permanently?
No. Florek stopped appearing as a regular cast member in 2014, but later returned to the role. E! reported that Cragen appeared in the show’s 500th episode in 2021 and that Florek reprised the character on Law & Order: Organized Crime in 2022 (E!). His departure ended Cragen’s regular presence on SVU, rather than every subsequent appearance.

What is known about Florek’s reason for leaving?
Contemporaneous coverage describes the character’s retirement and Florek’s end of filming as Cragen, but does not substantiate a separate personal or contractual reason for Florek’s exit from the regular cast. The supported explanation is the one the show gave for Cragen: mandatory retirement from the NYPD. The Los Angeles Times also noted that retirement had been discussed earlier in season 15 (Los Angeles Times).
