She usually finds the scent of hunters unpleasant, and she covers her nose around them. Sung Jinwoo is the exception: she detects a pleasant scent from him. The story’s own explanation, found in the English light novel, is that she is smelling pure mana radiating from him. That is a fictional sense of perception, not a claim about perfume or ordinary body odor.
What the official character profile establishes
Netmarble’s official Solo Leveling: ARISE character profile is the most direct confirmation of the premise. It describes Cha Hae-In as Korea’s ninth S-Rank hunter and the vice guild master of the Hunters Guild. Her special ability is to smell mana, and the profile notes that she habitually covers her nose, a detail it ties to a handkerchief.
The same profile singles out Jinwoo. In its words: “She is fascinated to discover that Sung Jinwoo is the only hunter she’s ever encountered with a pleasant scent.” This is company-written character copy, not a quotation from a named person, and it is the wording most readers will see first.
Why her sense of smell matters to the story
Mana sensing is usually shown in Solo Leveling through combat, gates, and rank. Hae-In’s version is unusual because it is olfactory. The scent works as a built-in signal: most hunters register to her as unpleasant, so Jinwoo stands out immediately. The reaction tells readers something about the character, but the profile itself frames her fascination as only one thread in their relationship, not the whole of it.

The chapter 83 encounter
The scene that sets up the contrast appears in chapter 83. Jinwoo is at the Hunters Guild dungeon working as a miner, not as a hunter, when he meets Hae-In. She notices that he lacks the unpleasant smell she associates with hunters and instead detects a pleasant odor. The same passage has the foreman explain that Hae-In can smell an odor from hunters and finds it horrible. This gives the reader a practical baseline: the problem is hunters in general, and Jinwoo is the exception to it.
This text is an English translation of chapter 83 on a chapter-reading site, not a publisher page. It is reliable for the scene’s content, but readers who want the official text should use the English light novel or the publisher’s edition.

What the light novel adds: “pure mana”
The English light novel gives the in-story reason. In a later passage, Hae-In recognizes that her first impression came from “the smell of pure mana radiating from Jinwoo.” That line supplies the explanation the official profile leaves out. The passage is available in an English reproduction of Volume 8 hosted on Scribd rather than on a publisher site, so treat the wording as a faithful reading of the novel rather than a verified official edition.
Source comparison
| Source | What it confirms | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| Netmarble official Solo Leveling: ARISE profile | Hae-In’s mana-smelling ability, her habit of covering her nose, and that Jinwoo is the only hunter she has met with a pleasant scent | Short character copy; does not explain the mechanism |
| English translation of chapter 83 (chapter-reading site) | The encounter at the Hunters Guild dungeon and the contrast with ordinary hunters’ scent | Not a publisher page; the foreman’s remarks are reported within the scene |
| English light novel, Volume 8 (reproduction on Scribd) | The “pure mana” explanation for the pleasant scent | Unofficial hosting; the source’s quality is lower than a publisher copy |
| Yen Press / Hachette catalog | That Solo Leveling is published as a light novel series with multiple volumes | Does not discuss the scent; current editions and availability should be checked with the retailer |
What the story does not settle
The available material supports a clear answer to the question of what she smells, but not a full account of why Jinwoo’s mana smells this way. The official profile does not unpack the mechanics, and the sources reviewed do not establish whether a particular System skill, blessing, or other property is the cause. Attributing it to a specific one would go beyond the text.

- Size: The height of 21cm enables Igris action figure to achieve a perfect balance between detail presentation and space occupation, easily integrating into various indoor scenes
- Material: Igris figures are made of PVC material, with exquisite craftsmanship, delicate carving, and precise coloring. The color is full and the transition is natural
- Desktop Figure: The Sung Jin Woo figurine, whether placed on a bookshelf in the study, a display cabinet in the living room, or a desk in the office, can clearly showcase every delicate detail and become a visual focal point
- Collecting Gifts: Anime figures not only satisfy fans' desire to collect, but can also be given as gifts to friends, classmates, colleagues, or family
What readers can state with confidence is narrow: Hae-In smells mana, most hunters smell unpleasant to her, and Jinwoo’s mana smells pleasant. The light novel’s phrase “pure mana” is the story’s own description of that effect, and it should be read as a fictional rule rather than a real-world fragrance or biology claim.
