Mulder tapes an X to his window as a signal to summon X, his informant. He is asking for contact, not marking the room for any other purpose. The clearest demonstration is in the episode One Breath, where the sign is put up, a light is shone through it, and the wait runs overnight.
What Mulder is doing when he tapes up the X
The X is a visual call. Mulder wants to reach X, the shadowy informant who repeatedly feeds him information, and the window is where he displays the request. Nothing in the scenes presents the mark as decoration or as a safety measure, and the way the sign is handled in the episodes supports reading it as a summons.
One Breath: the clearest example
In One Breath, the scene directions have Mulder take masking tape and place an X on his window. He then shines a lamp through it and waits through the night. The next morning he looks at the X, and since X has not appeared, he removes it.
Two details matter here. The material is ordinary masking tape, so the signal is improvised rather than a prop with special meaning. And the removal shows the sequence: the X is a request left up for a limited time, and when no response comes, Mulder takes it down.

Wetwired: the sign in a conversation about secrecy
In Wetwired, Mulder again tapes an X to his window. Shortly afterward, Frohike calls and tells him that the Lone Gunmen have found something but do not want to discuss it over the phone, because “Big Brother” may be listening. Mulder ends the call and goes to meet them.
This episode does not show X responding. What it adds is context: the X appears in the same world of discreet communication, where phones are distrusted and in-person contact is preferred. That fits the idea that the X belongs to the show’s surveillance-and-secrecy atmosphere.

What is inferred and what is not established
The statement that the X is a call signal for X is an inference drawn from the pattern across scenes and from X’s long-running role as Mulder’s informant. The transcript excerpts establish the signaling function clearly, but they do not describe a full protocol: how X sees the mark, how often Mulder can use it, how long it stays visible, or whether it is safe. Treat any more specific claim, such as a fixed schedule or a set of codes, as fan speculation unless a later episode states it on screen.
No creator, actor, or official production document was found that explains the window X in a quotable way. No character explicitly explains the symbol in dialogue either, so the reading above rests on what Mulder does with it.

How viewers have described it
Fans have asked the question directly for years. A December 1997 discussion on the alt.tv.x-files Usenet group, in an archived thread, shows viewers asking, “What does the ‘X’ on Mulder’s window mean?” One participant reasoned that it signals the informant, while other replies joked or offered guesses with no support in the episodes. The thread is useful for seeing how the question was phrased, but it is not evidence of what the show intended.

- The X is a signal for contact with X, Mulder’s informant.
- In One Breath, Mulder uses masking tape, shines a lamp through the mark, waits overnight, and removes it when X does not appear.
- In Wetwired, the X comes right before a call Mulder ends so the conversation can move to an in-person meeting.
- The episodes do not define a complete signaling protocol, so the finer rules remain an interpretation.
If you want to recreate the effect for a prop or fan project, masking tape is the only material the episodes show, and the lamp is the detail that makes the sign visible at night.
