He escapes confinement, returns to Haddonfield on Halloween night, and stalks several young women, Laurie among them. The film frames his return as evil that cannot be killed, not as a grudge against her. Later films change the answer. Some make Laurie his sister, which supplies a direct motive. The 2018 film drops that relationship, so the reason for his fixation on her goes unstated.
The 1978 original: pursuit without a stated reason
The official Halloween synopsis describes Michael’s escape and his return to Haddonfield, and it places Laurie among the victims he pursues. It does not say he chooses her because of a personal history or a family tie. Within the film, his pursuit of her is simply part of a wider killing spree on one night.
The original’s backstory is the closest it comes to a motive. The official John Carpenter film page notes that Michael murdered his sister as a child. That page does not identify Laurie as that sister. Viewers who read the 1978 film on its own should treat any link between the two as something added by later films.
Sibling continuity: the motive that later films add
The sibling answer belongs to later films. The official Halloween H20 (1998) description calls Laurie Michael’s sister and frames his return as an attempt to kill her. That gives the H20 continuity a plain reason for the attacks.
#1 Best Overall
- ICONIC SLASHER DESIGN: Capture the chilling look of a classic horror movie antagonist. This stark white, weathered face cover features a hauntingly expressionless design that is synonymous with 70s and 80s slasher cinema.
- PREMIUM QUALITY LATEX: Crafted from high-quality, eco-friendly natural latex. The mask is durable yet flexible, featuring realistic skin textures, deep wrinkles, and professional weathering for a truly terrifying aesthetic.
- COMFORTABLE FULL-HEAD FIT: Designed as a full-head slip-on mask with matted dark hair attached. The spacious design ensures a comfortable fit for most adults, providing full neck and head coverage for a seamless look with your coveralls or costume.
- ENHANCED VISIBILITY & BREATHABILITY: Featuring precision-cut eye holes and discreet ventilation points to ensure you can stay in character all night long. Perfect for haunted house actors, professional cosplayers, and Halloween enthusiasts.
- VERSATILE COSTUME PROP: The ultimate accessory for horror fans. Whether you’re attending a movie-themed party, performing in a theater production, or scaring neighbors at a haunted attraction, this mask delivers a professional-grade scare.
This is a valid answer for that continuity only. It is not a retroactive fact about every Halloween film, and it is not universal canon. Anyone citing “Laurie is Michael’s sister” should name the continuity they mean.
The 2018 film: a reset with no stated motive
The 2018 Halloween starts again from the 1978 original. According to the official franchise material, the later-sequel storyline is discarded, and Laurie is once again not Michael’s sister. The official page describes his obsession with her as nebulous.

“The idea was that you couldn’t kill evil, and that was how we came about the story.”
This is thematic context for the original’s returning evil. It is not a statement that Hill explained Michael’s individual reason for choosing Laurie. No official quotation in the material reviewed gives a psychological motive for that choice.

Comparing the versions
The films differ on three points: whether Laurie and Michael are related, whether a motive is stated, and which sequels the continuity recognizes.
| Version | Laurie and Michael related? | Motive stated? | Continuity note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Halloween (1978) | No. The film identifies no family tie between them. | No. Pursuit of Laurie is part of a wider Halloween-night spree. | Original film; Michael’s childhood sister murder is the only backstory the official film page gives. |
| Halloween H20 (1998) | Yes. The official description calls Laurie his sister. | Yes. His return is framed as an attempt to kill her. | Sibling continuity; not universal canon. |
| Halloween (2018) | No. Official franchise material says Laurie is not his sister. | No. His obsession is described as nebulous; no personal explanation is given. | Starts again from the 1978 original and discards the later-sequel storyline. |
How to answer the question for a specific film
- Name the film first. A 1978 answer and a 2018 answer are different questions.
- If the film links Laurie and Michael as siblings, the motive is that family conflict. Cite the continuity.
- If the film does not link them, the answer is that the film leaves the motive unexplained. Any theory beyond that is interpretation, not something the films or official material establish.
Fan theories about Michael’s choice of Laurie can be discussed, but they should be labeled as interpretation. The official sources above do not confirm any of them.
