There is no evidence that Johnny Depp has one fixed, named accent in everyday life. The clearest explanation for the Boston sound many viewers notice is a specific performance: in Black Mass, Depp played South Boston crime boss Whitey Bulger and prepared for the role with both informal exposure to a Boston-area accent and dialect coaching.
Why does Depp sound different in Black Mass?
Depp’s Boston-area voice in Black Mass was a character choice, not proof that his everyday speech permanently changed. In a 2015 interview with The Boston Globe, Depp said he had spent time with Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry before going to Boston. “Joe’s got a pretty thick accent, so I just sponged it,” he said, describing how Perry’s accent influenced his preparation.

That was one part of the process. Boston.com’s production report identifies dialect coaches Carla Meyer and Howard Samuelsohn as working with the cast. They helped actors practice sounds and lines, and a coach was present during dialogue scenes. The report describes the work as practical training for a role rather than an explanation for how Depp speaks in every setting.
What makes the Boston sound distinctive?
Samuelsohn explained that a familiar feature of the Boston accent is dropping R sounds, though he noted that Boston speakers handle them differently from New Yorkers. The coaching also involved working through script lines and sounds so actors could perform the dialogue naturally. As he told Boston.com, “The performance is more important than the accent.”

GBH’s account of the Boston accent similarly frames the task as getting Depp to speak like a Bostonian for Bulger. Actors can adopt a regional sound for a role without using it as their ordinary voice. Contemporary coverage described Depp’s performance as restrained, with a trace of the Boston accent rather than an exaggerated imitation.

No. The available reporting explains how Depp prepared a particular Boston voice for Black Mass; it does not establish that his everyday speech has one fixed accent or explain every variation heard in interviews and clips from different contexts. The role itself drew on the life of Whitey Bulger, a South Boston crime boss. TIME’s 2015 coverage describes Black Mass as based on the book by former Boston Globe reporters Dick Lehr and Gerard O’Neill. That is background to the character, not evidence about Depp’s speech outside the film.
