Some Olympic pistol shooters put their non-shooting hand in a pocket to keep it in a consistent position and help maintain balance while aiming. Turkish shooter Yusuf Dikeç described his own reason this way: “I only do it to keep my body more stable, to keep my balance.” It is a voluntary technique, not a position shown to be required by Olympic rules or used by every competitor.

How the position helps a pistol shooter

A pistol shooter holds the gun with one hand. Keeping the other arm in a repeatable position can help the athlete maintain a compact, balanced stance from shot to shot. A technical guide to Olympic pistol shooting describes placing the free hand in a pocket—or attaching it to the trouser belt—to keep the arm in the same place during the shooting process and support balance. The Fundamentals of Olympic Pistol Shooting presents this as technique guidance, not a rule.

Why Yusuf Dikeç’s pose became familiar

Dikeç’s relaxed-looking posture attracted attention during Paris 2024. He and teammate Şevval İlayda Tarhan won silver in the mixed-team 10-metre air-pistol event, and images of Dikeç with his free hand in his pocket circulated widely. The medal result is context for the pose’s visibility; it does not show that the hand position caused the result. In an August 2024 interview report, Dikeç said he used it to keep his body stable and his balance. Hürriyet Daily News reported his explanation, and BBC Sport covered the viral moment.

Is putting a hand in a pocket an Olympic rule?

The available sources establish a technique, not a universal Olympic requirement. The ISSF rules page lists the 2026 Rule Book, second print effective 1 July 2026. A separate ISSF guide addresses equipment for rifle competitors: it prohibits inside jacket pockets and permits one external pocket on a rifle jacket. Those clothing specifications concern rifle equipment; they do not establish a rule about a pistol shooter’s free hand. ISSF Rifle Equipment Control Guide, Edition 2026.

Pocket or belt: which should a shooter use?

The technical guide describes both a pocket and the trouser belt as ways to anchor the non-shooting arm. Neither source establishes one placement as universally better. The practical consideration is whether the athlete can keep the arm relaxed, repeat the position consistently, and remain comfortably balanced.
