The series presents them as brothers, and a character biography says their father, Aldo Burrows, left before Michael was born. A later Season 4 revelation complicates Lincoln’s family history, but it does not change the explanation for Michael’s name.
Why Michael is called Scofield
Michael took his mother’s maiden surname, Scofield. The character biography explains that Aldo Burrows left before Michael was born; Lincoln, by contrast, is known as Lincoln Burrows. Netflix describes Michael as Lincoln’s younger brother, so their different surnames do not mean the series initially presents them as unrelated.

What Season 4 adds about Lincoln
In Season 4, Christina tells Michael that Lincoln was adopted by Aldo when Lincoln was three, after Lincoln’s birth parents died. TV Guide’s episode description also reports Christina’s adoption claim. The available accounts establish that Christina says this; they do not independently confirm that her account is true.

During the reveal, Christina tells Michael, “Lincoln isn’t your brother.” That line is her claim in the scene, not a separate confirmation of Lincoln’s origins. Even with this complication, Michael’s use of his mother’s maiden name remains the explanation for why he is called Scofield.
