Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteDisney’s Eragon series could have an adaptation advantage over Greta Gerwig’s forthcoming The Magician’s Nephew: a television format can give a sprawling, multi-book fantasy more room, and author Christopher Paolini is involved in writing and producing it. That makes a credible case for its potential—not proof that it will be better. Neither project has been released, so the comparison is about what each setup can make possible.
Is Disney’s Eragon series still happening?
Yes. The latest detailed status cited here is Christopher Paolini’s March 5, 2026 update: the Disney+ adaptation of The Inheritance Cycle was in development, with scripts drafted and creative development under way. Paolini described that stage as preceding pre-production and production. The update does not say filming has begun or give a release date.
Paolini first announced the television project in July 2022, saying he was attached to co-write and produce it. In February 2026, he said Disney+ had officially announced the series as in development and named Todd Harthan and Todd Helbing as creative partners. His March update said Harthan had worked with him on the material for two years, Helbing had joined as co-showrunner, and Kerry Williamson had joined the writers room. Those are meaningful development details, but they do not establish a season count or confirm that all four books will be adapted.
For the source books, see Christopher Paolini’s official site, which identifies Eragon, Eldest, Brisingr, and Inheritance as books in the Inheritance Cycle.

What could a TV series do with Eragon that a movie cannot?
Give a multi-book story more room
The Inheritance Cycle spans more story and a wider fantasy world than one feature film can comfortably cover. A serialized adaptation has the potential to spend time on character development, relationships, and setting rather than compressing them into a single theatrical runtime. That is a format advantage, not a guarantee of faithful storytelling: no episode count, season plan, or full-book adaptation plan has been announced in the cited updates.
Put the author in the writing process
Paolini’s role as co-writer and producer gives the project a direct connection to the books’ creator. His account of drafted scripts and named writing partners offers a concrete reason for readers to hope the adaptation understands what matters in the source material. But the available announcements do not say that Paolini has final approval or control over every creative decision.

Why the Narnia comparison is still a serious one
The comparison is with a different kind of project: Greta Gerwig’s feature adaptation of The Magician’s Nephew, the Narnia origin story. Netflix’s September 22, 2026 announcement schedules the film for theaters on February 12, 2027, followed by a Netflix release on April 2, 2027. Netflix calls it the first adaptation of that novel.
Gerwig is writing and directing, a combination that can support a unified vision for a feature film. She has described a personal connection to the book, recalling that she fell in love with its idea of “a cosmic lion singing the world of Narnia to life.” The theatrical release also gives the story a major cinema outing before it arrives on streaming. These are plausible strengths, not evidence of the finished film’s quality.

How the two projects compare so far
| Question | Eragon | The Magician’s Nephew |
|---|---|---|
| Format and status | Disney+ television series in development; Paolini’s March 2026 update describes scripts and creative development. | Feature film scheduled for theaters February 12, 2027, and Netflix April 2, 2027. |
| Source material | The Inheritance Cycle, a multi-book story. | The Magician’s Nephew, a Narnia origin story. |
| Named creative involvement | Paolini is attached to co-write and produce; Todd Harthan and Todd Helbing are named as co-showrunners, and Kerry Williamson joined the writers room. | Greta Gerwig is writing and directing. |
| What the announcements establish | Development status, scripts, and named creative roles; no filming start or release date is stated. | Writer-director, theatrical and streaming release dates, and source novel. |
| What they do not establish | Finished quality, fidelity, release timing, season count, or a complete plan for adapting all four books. | Finished quality or how the film will compare with Eragon. |
Netflix also reports that the Narnia franchise has sold more than 120 million copies across 70 countries. That is franchise reach, not a measure of this film’s likely quality—and it is not a directly comparable Eragon sales figure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Could Eragon actually be better?
It could, if the series uses its longer form to develop the books’ characters and world, and if Paolini’s involvement helps guide the adaptation without being undermined by the production’s other choices. Narnia could also deliver a distinctive adaptation through Gerwig’s writer-director vision and a theatrical release. The available facts support a reasoned argument about each project’s potential, not a verdict on which one succeeds.
Rank #4
Until both are released, “better” can only mean better positioned on paper for a particular reader: Eragon has the clearer structural opportunity to accommodate a long story, while The Magician’s Nephew has a single-film creative approach with a named writer-director and scheduled cinema release. The finished work—not development status, source-material scale, or author involvement alone—will settle the comparison.
