Disney made Ariel a redhead because the color suited her personality and helped her stand out. Co-director Ron Clements said red “just seemed to fit Ariel’s personality”; co-director John Musker later added that it distinguished her from other Disney heroines and popped against the blue water.
Why Ariel’s hair is red
The original animated The Little Mermaid, directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, was released on November 17, 1989, according to Walt Disney Animation Studios. Clements gave a personal, lighthearted explanation in a 2006 Disney retrospective: “We’re both red-headed — or were! — and red hair just seemed to fit Ariel’s personality.” His comment presents red as a fitting character choice, not a formal design rule.
In a 2024 interview, Musker said the choice also made Ariel visually distinct from other Disney heroines and suited her fiery character. He described the color as standing out against the blue water, creating a warm-cool contrast. These are the directors’ retrospective explanations of the animated character’s design.
Was Ariel originally supposed to be blonde?
Musker recalled that studio chief Jeffrey Katzenberg expected the mermaid to be blonde. Musker connected that expectation to Splash, the 1984 film starring Daryl Hannah as Madison. He recalled that Katzenberg objected to the red-haired design, saying a mermaid was “supposed to be blonde.” That account comes from Musker’s later recollection; it is not independently confirmed here by a studio memo.

The visual comparison is clear: the Walt Disney Archives’ 40th-anniversary article about Splash identifies Hannah as Madison and describes her blonde hair. The Archives dates the film’s release to March 9, 1984. That establishes the earlier blonde-mermaid image Musker invoked, but does not itself establish that Splash caused Ariel’s design.
How the red design affected toys
Disney’s 2006 retrospective also says toymakers initially assumed Ariel would be blonde. When they learned her final look, they had to redo prototype dolls and toys. The episode illustrates how the red hair was part of the character’s recognizable design, even as it surprised people preparing merchandise.

Was Ariel’s hair red to contrast with her green tail?
The documented color-contrast explanation from Musker is the red hair against blue water. The sources cited here do not verify the often-repeated claim that Ariel’s hair was chosen specifically to contrast with her green tail. They also do not establish that red was selected because it was easier to animate or darken underwater.

This explanation concerns the 1989 animated Ariel. Disney’s 2023 article about the making of The Little Mermaid distinguishes the live-action reimagining and identifies Halle Bailey as its Ariel; the sources cited here do not give a detailed production rationale for that film’s hair design.
