The existing desktop and mobile game closed on March 29, 2017. That is the company’s documented public explanation; the announcement does not establish whether financial, technical, or audience-related concerns also influenced the decision.
What Disney announced
In a January 2017 announcement attributed to the Club Penguin Team, Disney said it was developing Club Penguin Island and would discontinue the existing game on desktop and mobile devices on March 29, 2017. The announcement described the move as a transition to an entirely new platform. The University of Toronto’s archival reproduction of the announcement preserves that explanation; a forum reproduction corroborates its wording.
Contemporary coverage described Club Penguin Island as the replacement for the original game. Disney’s announcement tied the closure to the planned launch of the new mobile experience, but did not spell out every consideration behind the decision. TechCrunch’s January 31, 2017 report provides contemporaneous context.
How the original game and its successor differed
| Question | Original Club Penguin | Club Penguin Island |
|---|---|---|
| Platform described in the announcement | Existing desktop and mobile game | New mobile experience |
| Role in Disney’s announcement | The game Disney said it would discontinue | The experience connected to the transition |
| What the announcement says about the motive | Disney publicly framed its discontinuation as part of the transition | Its planned launch was given as the context for that transition |
The announcement establishes how Disney presented the change, not that a specific technical limitation or platform choice made the closure inevitable.

What the historical figures do—and do not—show
Club Penguin began in 2005, and Disney acquired it in 2007. TechCrunch reported at the time that the deal valued the business at $700 million and that it had more than 12 million users. These are historical acquisition-era figures, not measurements of the game’s audience, finances, or performance in 2017. They provide background on the property’s earlier scale, but do not explain why Disney later discontinued it.
What is not established about the closure
The public announcement does not confirm that Club Penguin was unprofitable, had too few players, cost too much to operate, or could not be maintained with its existing technology. Those explanations may be offered as theories, but the cited announcement and contemporary reporting do not establish them as Disney’s stated reasons.

Community projects later recreated or revived versions of the experience. Club Penguin Legacy describes itself as a free-to-play recreation; it is a community project, not an official Disney revival.
