The most defensible explanation is a combination of factors: dramatic storytelling, high production values, easy access through online and dubbed distribution, and a story set in the Muslim and Ottoman past. For some young Indian Muslim viewers, that material may offer cultural familiarity and a compelling on-screen picture of their religious history. That is an interpretation, though, not a measured finding. The reporting available on the show’s Indian reception describes popularity; it does not establish how many young Indian Muslims watch, why they watch, or how their reasons differ.
What the show is, and what it is not
Diriliş: Ertuğrul is a Turkish historical drama centred on Ertuğrul, the father of Osman, and on events the series dramatizes as leading toward the founding of the Ottoman Empire. It is dramatized television, not a documentary record. Many of its scenes, characters and dialogues are invented or reshaped for storytelling, and viewers who want the historical record should treat it as a starting point for reading rather than a source of fact.

According to The Indian Express (2020), the series ran for five seasons from 2014 to 2019 and totalled 179 episodes. Those figures describe the broadcast run, not the number of viewers or the years in which Indian audiences watched it.
What reporting says about its popularity in India
Indian coverage has treated the show’s popularity among young Muslims as a notable trend. Two reports are the most directly relevant, and they differ in what they can support.

Neither report, as far as the material reviewed shows, includes a survey of Indian viewers. Neither gives a prevalence figure for young Indian Muslims. Read together, they establish that the show had a visible, sustained following in India during 2020 and 2021. They do not establish its size today.
Four overlapping explanations
The available evidence supports four explanations. They overlap, and nothing in the material reviewed shows that one of them accounts for the whole pattern.
1. Entertainment and production
The Indian Express, in its 2020 explainer, describes the general appeal of Turkish dramas in terms of high budgets, production quality, engaging storylines and actors. It notes that viewers may respond to the story, the cast, the sets or the broader messages. These are observations about Turkish television in general, offered as plausible reasons. They are not findings about Indian youth. The show’s combination of battle sequences, political intrigue and personal loyalty gives it a dramatic pace that does not require any particular cultural background to enjoy.
2. The Ottoman and Muslim past as cultural resonance
This is the explanation most closely tied to the show’s identity. A drama that places Muslim characters at the centre of a founding narrative offers something that many mainstream entertainment formats do not. For a viewer who sees Muslim history portrayed rarely and mostly through a lens of conflict or caricature, a sympathetic, heroic depiction may carry weight beyond its entertainment value.

The Pakistan survey discussed below supports the plausibility of this reading there, but it does not show that Indian viewers share it. The reasoning here should remain an interpretation. Some viewers may watch for the history, others for the drama, and many for both.
3. Distribution and language access
Access matters as much as appeal. Indian viewers have reached the show through online platforms and dubbed versions, which lowers the barrier of language and availability. The Indian Express’s 2020 report on Pakistan notes that the show’s distribution beyond Turkey helped build its regional visibility. The best-quantified example in the material is from Pakistan, not India, and it should be read as evidence of how distribution works in general rather than as an Indian statistic.
4. Political and religious framing
The show’s reception in Pakistan was shaped by political promotion, which is a separate question from why individuals choose to watch. This framing is relevant to India only as context. Its effect on Indian viewers is not documented in the material reviewed.
The Pakistan comparison
The clearest audience data comes from a TRT World Research Centre case study published on May 21, 2020, based on a January 2020 study of 558 participants in Pakistan. It is the best available quantified picture of why Turkish drama attracts viewers in a Muslim-majority country, but it describes Pakistan only.

| Participants who had consumed at least four Turkish series over five years | Nearly half |
| Respondents who prioritized overall entertainment value | 55% |
| Respondents who valued the depiction of Ottoman culture | 52% |
| Respondents who responded positively to representations of Muslim history | 49% |
These percentages describe a Pakistani sample at one point in time. They should not be applied to India, and they should not be read as a ranking of motives, since the figures are reported as separate preferences rather than as a single breakdown of one choice per viewer. Their value here is to show that entertainment and historical-cultural interest both register strongly among viewers of Turkish drama in one large Muslim-majority market.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan promoted the series in 2020. According to a post from the Prime Minister’s Office, reproduced by The Indian Express, he described it as a way for young people to learn “Islamic history and ethics.” The Indian Express also quotes him as saying “It has romance….but it has Islam’s values,” in a description of Turkish dramas and their relevance to Pakistan.
These statements explain why the Pakistani government chose to promote the show. They are not evidence of why Indian viewers watch it. No direct, verified quotation from a young Indian Muslim viewer appears in the material reviewed, so this article does not offer one.
What the evidence cannot tell you
- How many young Muslims in India watch the show, and whether that number is large or a visible minority of online attention.
- Whether the age profile, religious identity or regional spread of Indian viewers differs from what is described in the Pakistan sample.
- Which reason matters most to Indian viewers. Entertainment, history and distribution may each be decisive for different people.
- Whether the popularity reported in 2020 and 2021 persists. The sources are from those years, so they describe that period’s reception and cannot be used to claim the show’s current popularity in 2026.
How to weigh a claim about this show
A reasonable test for any claim about the show’s popularity among Indian Muslim youth is to ask which kind of evidence supports it. Reports of popularity, subscriber counts and search trends show that attention exists. Survey data from a named sample shows what that sample reported. Only a survey of Indian viewers, with a stated sampling method, can say how common a motive is among them. Until such a survey is available, the most accurate description is that the show drew a visible and sustained following among young Indian Muslims in 2020 and 2021, for reasons that most likely combine entertainment, history and access.
For readers who want to watch the show or read more about its historical framing, the same caution applies. Treat the series as a dramatization, check its characters and events against historical sources, and keep the entertainment value and the historical claims separate in your own judgement.
One practical point: if you see a statement such as “most young Indian Muslims watch this show,” ask which survey it comes from, when it was conducted and who was included. In the material reviewed, no such source appears.
To summarize the evidence briefly: the show’s Indian following is documented in journalism from 2020 and 2021, its general appeal is explained in reporting on Turkish drama, and its audience composition is measured only for Pakistan.
Viewers who want to place the show in a wider context of documentaries and historical television can use the same method: separate what a source measures from what it suggests.
