Jason Alexander later said he and Heidi Swedberg struggled to find a comic rhythm in scenes together. After Jerry Seinfeld and Julia Louis-Dreyfus experienced similar difficulty, Louis-Dreyfus joked about killing Susan; Alexander said Larry David turned the joke into the character’s exit. Alexander also stressed that this was about the characters and their acting chemistry, not personal dislike of Swedberg.
How Susan died on Seinfeld
Susan’s death comes in “The Invitations,” the season-seven finale. George and Susan are engaged, and George buys cheap wedding invitation envelopes. The glue on them is toxic; after licking the envelopes, Susan becomes ill and dies. Global News reported that the episode aired May 16, 1996, and that Swedberg played Susan in 28 episodes. What Jason Alexander said led to the decision
In a 2015 interview with Howard Stern, Alexander described difficulty finding the same comic timing as Swedberg. CBS News quoted him: “Her instincts for doing a scene — where the comedy was — and mine were always misfiring.” Alexander said Seinfeld and Louis-Dreyfus initially thought he might be imagining the problem, but found the same challenge when they performed scenes with Swedberg. CBS News
Alexander recalled that Louis-Dreyfus joked, “Julia actually said, ‘I know — don’t you just wanna kill her?’” He said Larry David used the remark as the inspiration for killing off Susan. TIME also reported Alexander’s account of the cast’s difficulty and the joke behind the plot choice. TIME

It was a character decision, not a personal feud
Alexander’s comments were taken by some as criticism of Swedberg herself. He apologized for how his explanation came across and clarified that the remark about killing referred to Susan, not the actress. As he put it in Global News’s account: “When the comment was made about ‘killing,’ no one was talking about the actress – they were talking about the character.” He also described Swedberg as a “terrific girl.” Global News
A 2026 TVLine retrospective quotes Alexander describing Swedberg as “a kind, lovely person” and notes his belief that Susan was the character David and Seinfeld wanted for George. His account is about how the performers’ scene work felt to him and how a joking suggestion became a story idea; it does not establish that Swedberg was a bad actor or that she was dismissed after a personal dispute. Susan’s death was not settled from the start of the season
Alexander said the writers had not decided at the beginning of season seven how the engagement would end. The possibilities he recalled included George marrying Susan, Susan leaving George, or George leaving Susan. Her sudden death was the fourth outcome. That makes it a reported creative choice made during the season, rather than a long-planned ending or evidence of a firing dispute. Global News TVLine
