Neither Nina Dobrev nor Ian Somerhalder publicly confirmed a reason for their breakup. When their split was reported in May 2013, Us Weekly cited anonymous sources who speculated that their age difference and Dobrev wanting to experience other things may have played a part. Those were source claims, not an explanation confirmed by either actor.
What was reported about the breakup?
CBS News reported on May 9, 2013, that the actors’ off-screen romance had ended after several years. The couple had gone public with their relationship in 2011. Us Weekly reported the next day that they had been together for about three years.

Us Weekly said neither actor had publicly commented on the split at the time. The report quoted one source describing the breakup as free of mean-spirited motives. Another anonymous source speculated that the ten-year age difference and Dobrev wanting to experience other things may have contributed. The outlet did not present those suggestions as statements from Dobrev or Somerhalder.
Was the age gap the reason?
That possibility appeared in the anonymous-source reporting, but it was not confirmed by the actors. The ten-year figure and its connection to the split should therefore be treated as part of a reported theory—not as an established cause.

Did Dobrev say she wanted to experience other things?
Us Weekly attributed that idea to an unnamed insider. It was not a public explanation from Dobrev. The distinction matters: the report offers a possible interpretation from a source, not a direct account of what she decided or why the relationship ended.
Did Dobrev later explain the breakup?
No. In remarks from August 2013, Dobrev spoke generally about relationships and personal identity: “People aren’t defined by their relationships. The whole point is being true to yourself and not losing yourself in relationships, whether romances or friendships.” She did not identify those comments as an explanation for her split with Somerhalder.

Did the breakup cause her to leave The Vampire Diaries?
The available reporting here does not establish that the breakup caused Dobrev’s later departure from the series. A 2015 E! report was summarized as saying people working on the show saw no issue with the former couple continuing to work together, while breakup rumors had been linked to her exit. That limited secondary context does not prove either that the breakup caused her departure or that it played no role.
