What happened at the Hotel Adlon?
On November 19, 2002, Jackson appeared on a balcony at Berlin’s Hotel Adlon with his infant son, identified in contemporary reports as Prince Michael II. He briefly held the child beyond the railing as fans watched below. The scene was filmed and widely broadcast. Accounts differ on whether the balcony was on the fourth or fifth floor, so the precise floor is not settled by the contemporaneous reporting. The Los Angeles Times reported on the incident and police response; contemporary coverage also identified the child and described the balcony scene.

Why did Jackson say he did it?
In a written statement reported the following day, Jackson said fans had asked to see the baby and that he had responded in the moment. He wrote: “I made a terrible mistake. I got caught up in the excitement of the moment. I would never intentionally endanger the lives of my children.” This records his public explanation, not independent confirmation of what he was thinking.
How did people react, and what is known about the police response?
The images prompted shock and criticism. The Los Angeles Times reported that Berlin police were examining whether there was cause to open an investigation into whether a crime had been committed. That report does not establish whether an investigation ultimately proceeded or how any review was resolved, so it does not support a claim that Jackson was charged or that authorities reached a particular legal finding.
