No official reason has been given. As of October 2026, neither Bungie nor Gina Torres has publicly explained why she stopped voicing Ikora Rey in Destiny 2. What is documented is that Torres was replaced in the role in May 2021, that fans noticed the change before Bungie said anything about it, and that the explanations circulating since are speculation. This article sets out the timeline, who voices the character now, and what each theory does and does not rest on.
Who voiced Ikora Rey, and who does now
Ikora Rey, the Warlock Vanguard, was voiced by Gina Torres through Destiny 2’s content up to spring 2021. In May 2021 she was replaced by Mara Junot. The two names are easy to mix up, and so is the character: Ikora is often confused with Queen Mara Sov, and the shared first name “Mara” between the replacement actress and the queen adds to that confusion. Ikora Rey is the character to search for when you want the voice question answered.
| Item | Before May 2021 | From May 2021 |
|---|---|---|
| Voice of Ikora Rey | Gina Torres | Mara Junot |
| How the change became known | Torres voiced the role in Destiny 2 content up to spring 2021 | Fans noticed the new voice at the Season of the Splicer reveal; Junot later confirmed her casting herself |
| Official announcement by Bungie | Not applicable | Not made, according to Forbes coverage from May 20, 2021 |
What is established
- Torres played Ikora Rey. Her last recorded role in the character preceded the change; she had also recorded a Cameo video encouraging Warlocks to take part in the Guardian Games only weeks before the recast was noticed, according to Paul Tassi’s reporting in Forbes.
- The change was noticed on May 4, 2021. That was the date of the Season of the Splicer reveal trailer, where fans first picked up on the new Ikora voice. Sixth Axis, GameSpot and DualShockers reported on the change around that time.
- The new voice was confirmed in-game around May 11, 2021, when Season of the Splicer launched and players heard the new performance in content. Some coverage gives 2017 as the year of the change, but that conflicts with the Forbes, Inverse, GameSpot and Sixth Axis reporting, so the 2021 date is the one that is better supported.
- Bungie did not announce the recast. Tassi wrote in Forbes on May 20, 2021, that Bungie never said Ikora had been recast, even though it was obvious. He also reported that Torres’ PR agency did not respond to him.
- Mara Junot confirmed her role publicly. About a week after the season launched, Junot began tweeting about voicing Ikora. In his Forbes reporting, Tassi said the only reply he received came from Junot by direct message.
What nobody has confirmed
No statement from Bungie, Torres or Junot explaining the departure has been published that we could find. There is no on-record account of a contract dispute, a falling-out, or a decision by Torres to leave, and there is no evidence that she was dismissed. Any answer that names a cause is therefore a guess. The most useful thing a reader can do is separate the guesses by how much evidence they rest on.
The explanations in circulation
All of the following are unconfirmed.
Scheduling or other projects
Tassi wrote in Forbes that the obvious implication was that Torres may have been too busy. GameSpot pointed out that she was then starring in 9-1-1: Lone Star, which gives the theory a concrete basis: a known commitment that could plausibly have competed with seasonal voice sessions. A busy schedule would explain a recast without requiring any dispute, but it is an inference from her public work, not a statement from her or from Bungie.

Cost
DualShockers suggested that keeping a high-profile actor for seasonal content might not make financial sense for Bungie, and said plainly that this was unconfirmed. Sixth Axis claimed she was fairly expensive to hire, and Inverse reported that fans theorized she was too expensive or too busy. These are all commentary. No salary, contract length or fee has been published, so the cost theory cannot be tested against any figure.
Other causes
No source supports any other specific cause. Explanations involving a contract dispute or a personal falling-out have no documentary basis and should not be treated as likely.

Which explanation holds up best
| Explanation | Source of the claim | Evidence quality | Plausibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scheduling or other projects | Tassi (Forbes); GameSpot noting her 9-1-1: Lone Star role | Speculative; based on her public commitments, not on any statement | Plausible, because a known competing role existed |
| Cost of a high-profile actor | DualShockers; Sixth Axis; fan theories reported by Inverse | Speculative; no salary or fee figures published | Possible in principle, but untested |
| Contract dispute, falling-out or dismissal | No source | None | Not supported by any evidence |
The scheduling explanation is the most plausible of the three because it relies on a documented commitment rather than on assumptions about money. It still remains an inference. Only Bungie, Torres or Junot could confirm or rule it out, and none has done so.

If a statement is ever made, it will most likely come from Bungie’s official channels or from the social accounts of Torres or Junot. Until then, the answer to “why did she leave” is that the reason has not been made public. The verifiable facts are the May 2021 recast, the replacement by Mara Junot, and the absence of any official explanation.

- Stickers on box may vary
Ikora Rey remains the character’s name; Queen Mara Sov is a different character in the same game. Searches for the Ikora recast are most accurate when they use the character’s name rather than the queen’s.
Because no quotation from Bungie, Torres or Junot explaining the change has been published, this article does not quote one. Readers who want the full wording of Tassi’s reporting should read his Forbes article from May 20, 2021, titled “The Mystery Of Destiny 2’s New Ikora Rey.”
