Deja smashes Randall and Beth’s car with a baseball bat in the Season 2 finale, “The Wedding.” The act comes after her mother has left and while Deja is still emotionally raw, and it is set off by a remark from Toby’s mother that wrongly treats Deja as one of Randall’s biological daughters.
What happens in the scene
The finale sets a family wedding against Deja’s recent emotional upheaval. TV Guide’s coverage of the episode (2018) describes her as still raw over her mother leaving and says she takes that out on Randall and Beth’s car. TVLine’s finale recap (2018) supplies the immediate trigger: Toby’s mother mistakenly believes Deja is one of Randall’s birth daughters, which sends Deja into a fury, and she then takes a baseball bat to the windshield.

Trigger versus underlying cause
Two separate things drive the moment, and they are easy to blur together. The table separates them.
| Layer | What the sources describe | Source (date) |
|---|---|---|
| Immediate trigger | Toby’s mother assumes Deja is Randall’s biological daughter | TVLine finale recap (2018) |
| Underlying context | Deja’s mother has left, and Deja is emotionally raw | TV Guide finale coverage (2018) |
| Outlet for the anger | Randall and Beth’s car, damaged with a baseball bat | TV Guide (2018) and TVLine (2018) |
The trigger explains why the anger erupted at that particular moment. The underlying context explains why it was so intense. Neither source presents the mistaken remark as the only cause.

The most defensible reading
The best reading of the scene is that Deja’s outburst expresses accumulated hurt and anger, and that the mistaken-identity remark sharpens her sense of not belonging in a family that is gathering to celebrate. This is an interpretation of the sequence as the recaps describe it, not a diagnosis of Deja and not a claim about her character beyond this episode.
What the scene does not establish
- It does not show that Deja is a habitual vandal. The moment is presented as a single explosion of feeling at the wedding.
- It does not establish a criminal pattern. Nothing in the recaps describes the car-smashing as the start of a broader course of behavior.
- It does not settle what comes next. A 2018 TVLine piece on the finale’s flash-forwards discusses the episode’s time jumps and emotionally loaded structure, but the scene summaries alone do not confirm that the flash-forward points to a recurring pattern in Deja’s behavior.
- It does not come with an on-the-record explanation. The sources available for this article contain no attributable quotation from the show’s creators or cast explaining why Deja takes the bat to the car, so any motive beyond what the episode shows is inference.
How to check the scene yourself
- Search your streaming service for This Is Us and open Season 2, Episode 18, “The Wedding.”
- Watch the wedding sequence closely around Toby’s mother’s remark, since that exchange is the immediate trigger and is easy to miss in a crowded scene.
- Note where the car damage appears relative to the remark, so you can judge for yourself whether the sequence supports the reading of accumulated hurt.
