Alexis Bledel chose to step away from The Handmaid’s Tale, and she has not publicly given a specific personal or professional reason. She announced the departure in May 2022, ahead of season five, when she had played Emily (also known as Ofglen) on the Hulu series. The available statements describe the decision as hers and nothing more. Reporting that links it to her private life or to online theories does not establish a cause.
What Bledel said
Bledel’s departure statement, reported by TheWrap and TVLine at the time, reads in full:
“After much thought, I felt I had to step away from The Handmaid’s Tale at this time. I am forever grateful to Bruce Miller for writing such truthful and resonant scenes for Emily, and to Hulu, MGM, the cast and crew for their support.”
The statement is notable for what it leaves out. It says she thought about the decision at length and that she felt she had to leave “at this time,” but it names no reason. It thanks the showrunner for the material he wrote for Emily and credits Hulu, MGM, and the cast and crew, but it does not describe a dispute, a contract issue, or a health matter.

What showrunner Bruce Miller said
Miller addressed the exit in comments reported by ComingSoon, which quoted his interview with The Hollywood Reporter. The reported wording is: “[Alexis] made that decision completely on her own; it was a complicated time and she let me know.” The excerpt available to ComingSoon’s readers is the portion quoted there; the full interview is the place to check for any additional context.
The phrase “a complicated time” is the only characterization Miller gave. It confirms that the choice was Bledel’s and that the period was difficult in some sense. It does not say what made it complicated, and it should not be read as pointing to a specific cause.

What the reporting does not establish
- A specific reason. Neither Bledel’s statement nor Miller’s comment names one.
- A link to her private life. No outlet cited in the coverage ties the decision to a personal matter, and fan theories that do so remain unverified.
- A contract or creative dispute. The coverage does not report one, and Bledel’s thanks to Miller and the production companies point away from a public falling-out.
- Any statement from Bledel after May 2022 explaining the choice. If she has given a fuller account since then, it was not part of the coverage cited here.
How Emily’s story ended on screen
The show did not leave Emily’s fate open. Season-five coverage from The Direct describes the storyline in which Sylvia tells June that Emily has returned to Gilead. That is a plot development within the fiction. It explains the character’s absence in the series but has no bearing on why Bledel left, which was a real-world decision that the show’s writers then had to work around.

Bledel did not stay away permanently. The Daily Beast reported her return as Emily in the series finale in 2025. Her earlier exit and this later appearance are two separate facts: the first concerns why she stepped back from regular work on the show, and the second shows that she came back for its conclusion. Reporting on the finale does not say that her 2022 decision was reversed or explained.

The series is based on Margaret Atwood’s novel of the same name, which is the best place for readers who want background on the story itself. It does not address Bledel’s departure.
