Writer-director Christian Gudegast identified COVID-19 as the first major obstacle in the long wait for Den of Thieves 2: Pantera. A December 2024 excerpt also mentions broader “state of the world” roadblocks, but it cuts off before giving his full explanation. The same excerpt reports that three new images were unveiled, without describing what they show.
What Gudegast said about the delay
In an excerpt from a December 2024 ScreenRant interview indexed by IMDb, Gudegast said: “The first hit was Covid. We were just about to do it, then Covid hit, and that was that,” the excerpt reported by IMDb. It also attributes the roadblocks to the “state of the world.”

The available excerpt ends as Gudegast begins to mention an actor’s knee injury. It does not provide the rest of his answer, so the specific effect of that injury—and any other causes he may have discussed—cannot be established from the accessible text.
What is known about the three new images
The IMDb-indexed excerpt says ScreenRant unveiled three images from the sequel. The accessible text does not describe their contents, so it does not establish who or what appears in them. The excerpt confirms the count, not the image details.

Why the sequel was part of a longer plan
Gudegast said the “long form of the story was sort of mapped out from the beginning.” In a December 16, 2024 interview with ComingSoon, he described the intention as building a franchise around “very elaborate, fascinating heists all over the world.” He also said research for the first film yielded material that could not fit into one movie. Read the ComingSoon interview.
Gudegast discussed researching diamond-police investigations and spending time with thieves from the Balkans. That is background on his research process; it does not make the film a documentary or establish that its plot recounts one specific real heist.
What Den of Thieves 2: Pantera is about
The 2018 film’s sequel brings back Gerard Butler as Nick “Big Nick” O’Brien and O’Shea Jackson Jr. as Donnie Wilson, with Gudegast returning as writer-director. The story follows Nick to Europe as he closes in on Donnie, who is involved with diamond thieves and the Panther mafia as they plan a major heist.
