Demi Lovato said the exhausting part was repeatedly having to explain and educate people about why they identified with they/them pronouns—not using those pronouns themselves. In a June 2023 interview with GQ Hype Spain, Lovato said that experience was one reason they also felt comfortable using she/her.
What Lovato said was exhausting
In the GQ Hype Spain interview, Lovato described repeatedly educating people and explaining why they identified with they/them as “absolutely exhausting,” according to English-language reports translating the Spanish-language interview. The remark concerned the ongoing work of explaining their identity to others; it should not be read as saying that they/them pronouns themselves were exhausting.
