Every spring, Basant Panchami brings devotees in yellow to Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya Dargah in Delhi, where mustard flowers, marigolds and qawwali mark an observance associated with Amir Khusrau. The story behind it is preserved as dargah tradition: Khusrau is said to have sung to lift his grieving spiritual teacher’s spirits. It is a cherished account, not a fully documented episode from the 14th century.
What happens at Nizamuddin Dargah on Basant Panchami?
Reports from the shrine describe devotees wearing yellow and bringing flowers, including mustard blossoms and marigolds. In 2024, The Indian Express reported yellow chadar offerings at the graves of Nizamuddin Auliya and Amir Khusrau, followed by qawwali later in the day. A 2026 report describes devotees carrying flowers and a Basant performance that includes verses attributed to Khusrau. Exact arrangements can differ from year to year.
The dargah is the shrine of Nizamuddin Auliya, and Khusrau’s tomb is within the complex. Qawwali is not limited to Basant: India’s tourism site identifies Thursday evening as a regular occasion for it at the shrine. Why is Basant Panchami celebrated at Nizamuddin Dargah?
The observance is linked to a story told by shrine custodians. Sufi Ajmal Nizami, a dargah custodian, told The Indian Express that Nizamuddin Auliya was grieving the death of his nephew when Khusrau came across people celebrating spring in yellow and carrying mustard flowers. In the account, Khusrau adopted the spring colours and imagery, then sang to his teacher and helped lift his spirits.

Nizami described the custom as dating back about 700 years and said, “Since then, this celebration has become an annual tradition.” That age and origin belong to the custodian’s account of the tradition; the sources do not independently establish the episode as a documented historical event. Later reporting likewise connects Khusrau’s spring verses with the dargah’s Basant repertoire.
How the Basant observance differs from Jahan-e-Khusrau
The similarly named Jahan-e-Khusrau is a separate festival of Sufi music, poetry and dance. It is organized by the Rumi Foundation and was started by filmmaker Muzaffar Ali in 2001, according to a 2025 announcement from the Government of India. Basant Panchami, by contrast, is a recurring observance at Nizamuddin Dargah associated with the custodian-told story of Khusrau and his teacher.

At Basant, the connection between Khusrau and Nizamuddin Auliya is expressed through song, poetry and seasonal ritual. The custodian-attributed story gives the gathering its emotional meaning: spring’s yellow flowers become a gesture of comfort, and music becomes a way to accompany grief. The observance keeps that association alive without requiring the traditional account to be treated as independently verified history.
