The post drew online criticism, with outlets reporting that critics characterized it and Messing’s related posts as bigoted or Islamophobic. The meme’s labels were accusations, not verified descriptions of Mamdani.
What did Debra Messing share?
TheWrap reported that Messing reshared the image on Instagram on November 4, 2025, while New Yorkers were voting for mayor. The graphic contrasted “A Democrat Just a Democrat” with “An Actual Communist Jihadist A Literal Karl Marx-Quoting, America-Hating Jihadist.” TheWrap reproduced the latter phrases with slightly different capitalization as “An Actual Communist Jihadist” and “A literal Karl Marx-quoting, America-hating jihadist.”
The original post was an Instagram Story, a format that is ephemeral. The account here is based on reporting by TheWrap, Euronews and The Independent; whether the original Story remains accessible is unconfirmed.
Why did the post draw criticism?
The meme depicted Mamdani, a Muslim candidate, as both a communist and a jihadist. Those are the meme’s claims, not established facts about him. TheWrap reported that critics called the post “openly bigoted”; Euronews and The Independent described criticism of Messing’s posts as Islamophobic. These are attributed assessments of the rhetoric and its impact, rather than neutral labels.

The dispute took place amid Messing’s opposition to Mamdani and his support for Palestinian rights. The Associated Press later described anti-Muslim rhetoric directed at Mamdani, including the label “jihadist sympathizer,” in coverage of his rise as an attack target. AP also reported that Mamdani had denounced Hamas’s October 7, 2023 attack and said he would work to combat antisemitism. That context does not establish the truth of the meme’s accusations.
What did Mamdani say about Israel and antisemitism?
In a June interview cited by Euronews, Mamdani said: “I support Israel’s right to exist as a state with equal rights. I’m not comfortable supporting any state that has a hierarchy of citizenship on the basis of religion or anything else.” Euronews also reported that he said he would not tolerate antisemitism. These are his attributed public positions, separate from the claims in the image.
