Discovery (WBD), David Ellison’s role in the bid, and his father Larry Ellison’s support. Its headline is commentary—not a literal account of a gift or a neutral description of a completed deal. The central question is whether the proposed acquisition made strategic sense, and what Larry Ellison’s backing meant for his son’s ambitions.
What Lopatto’s headline means
Lopatto opens, “Media is a business about dreams, and Larry Ellison’s son is dreaming big.” The “big dumb gift” wording is her critical framing of Larry Ellison’s support for David, not a reported transfer of Warner Bros. Discovery or a finding that a deal had closed. The article examines a parent’s wealth and influence in the context of a high-stakes media bid, while judging the strategic case for the acquisition as incoherent. That judgment belongs to Lopatto’s analysis; it is not an established fact about the company’s motives.
David Ellison led Paramount Skydance, the company linked to the competing proposal. The story asks why it wanted WBD and whether the pursuit was driven by a persuasive business strategy, as opposed to the appeal of owning prestigious media assets and gaining influence. The available account frames those as questions and interpretation, not proof of personal motive.
How the Netflix and Paramount proposals differed
The figures in Lopatto’s December 2025 article describe proposals with different scopes, so they should not be read as a direct price comparison. Netflix’s reported agreement covered most of WBD’s studio business; the Paramount proposal was presented as an offer for the company.

| Proposal as reported | Scope | Reported figure | How to read it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Netflix | Most of WBD’s studio business | $83 billion, including debt | Reported agreement value for the studio-business transaction, not a per-share cash offer for all of WBD. |
| Netflix-linked plan and separate networks company | A proposed split between the Netflix acquisition and a separate cable-networks company | $31–$32 per share | WBD’s stated value for the proposed split, as attributed in the Verge excerpt to the Wall Street Journal. |
| Paramount-linked proposal | Broader company acquisition, as described in the comparison | $30 per share | The per-share offer used in the December 2025 comparison; it is not directly comparable to Netflix’s $83 billion figure. |
The distinction matters: an enterprise-value-style figure that includes debt for most of a studio business is not the same measure as a per-share bid for a broader company. The reported $30 and $31–$32 per-share figures sit closer together numerically, but they still describe different proposal structures and should be understood in that context.
What later reporting said—and what remains unconfirmed here
Later reproduced Verge live coverage reported a Paramount offer of $31 per share in cash, said WBD deemed it superior, and reported that Netflix withdrew. That is a later development than the December 16 comparison, not a replacement for the figures in Lopatto’s original article.

The later report also described an agreement and a shareholder vote. The original article’s analysis and its December figures remain distinct from that later reported sequence.

Lopatto’s criticism centers on the coherence of Paramount’s acquisition case: the bid’s scale and ambition invite questions about the strategic logic, while Larry Ellison’s financial backing makes the family relationship part of the story. WBD’s studio assets and networks could carry commercial value, prestige, and influence, but those possible attractions do not by themselves establish why a bidder acted or whether the deal would make business sense.

The most useful way to read the headline, then, is as an argument about power and ambition in media ownership. It compresses Lopatto’s skepticism into a phrase; it should not be mistaken for a factual description of the bid’s terms or its outcome.
