Dave Matthews withdrew from both the January 2025 FireAid benefit and the MusiCares Persons of the Year gala because of a critical illness in his family, according to Dave Matthews Band. The band did not identify the family member or share further medical details.
Why did Dave Matthews drop out of FireAid?
On January 16, 2025, Dave Matthews Band announced that Matthews could not perform at FireAid that week “due to a critical illness in the family.” He had been scheduled to appear with John Mayer at the January 30 benefit at the Kia Forum. Dave Matthews Band’s FireAid update gave no further explanation.
FireAid was organized to benefit people affected by the Los Angeles-area wildfires. The Associated Press reported that proceeds were intended for wildfire-affected communities, with distribution arranged under the Annenberg Foundation and an advisory committee. The AP’s report on the announcement provides that event context.
Why did he cancel the MusiCares appearance?
On January 21, Dave Matthews Band announced that the same critical illness in the family meant Matthews could not perform at the 2025 MusiCares Persons of the Year gala. The event honored the Grateful Dead. The band’s MusiCares update did not give a separate reason.
