Adi Shankar has said Devil May Cry is personal because its story draws on childhood loss, trauma, and the effort to heal. He has connected some of the series’ emotional material to his own memories of growing up in Kolkata and later moving to the United States. That makes Dante a meaningful lens on themes Shankar cares about—not a one-to-one portrait of the creator.
Childhood loss is the central connection
Shankar’s clearest explanation comes from his description of the series’ first season. “Season 1 is about how we all lost something as children, and we spend the rest of our lives trying to reclaim it or find it or heal from it,” he told Esquire.

That framing helps explain why Dante’s history matters beyond the mechanics of demon hunting. The Netflix series introduces him as an orphaned hunter-for-hire drawn into a conflict between the human and demon realms. Shankar has described its Dante as a young version still discovering his backstory. In his interpretation, a character shaped by loss can carry the larger question of how people live with what childhood took from them.
This is Shankar’s thematic explanation of the show, not evidence that Dante’s experiences duplicate his own. The series is based on Capcom’s game franchise, but Shankar told TV Insider that the adaptation occupies its own universe and was designed to welcome viewers unfamiliar with the games.

The White Rabbit story asks viewers to understand an antagonist
Shankar’s interest in childhood wounds also shapes the White Rabbit, an antagonist whose story invites viewers to look past the label of “villain.” He told TV Guide: “And by the end of it, I want you to understand that the biggest enemy in your life is also a hurt kid, just like you.”
The point is not that harmful actions stop mattering once their causes are understood. Rather, Shankar’s approach asks how pain and personal history can help explain a person’s choices without reducing that person to a simple symbol of evil. In another formulation, he has said villains may see themselves as heroes in their own stories. That moral complexity connects the White Rabbit to the series’ broader interest in damage, memory, and recovery.

Episode 6 echoes Shankar’s memories of Kolkata and migration
Shankar has given a more autobiographical account of the emotional impetus behind episode 6. Recalling childhood in Kolkata, he told TV Guide that seeing children living in poverty raised a question he could not resolve: “‘Why are there so many poor people?’ No one gave me an answer, and it really bothered me.”
He connected those memories with moving to the United States and later recognizing survivor’s guilt. This is Shankar’s account of how his own experience informed the episode’s imagery and emotional force; it should not be mistaken for a factual explanation of poverty in Kolkata or a claim that Dante shares Shankar’s biography. The link is one of perspective: the episode draws emotional weight from questions and feelings Shankar says stayed with him.

Season two brings family and cultural memory into focus
Shankar’s comments about the second season add another layer, but they refer to a later stage of the series. In a May 28, 2026 interview with Animation World Network, he discussed brothers, family history, Indian music, and Hindu mythological influences. He said he was not consciously inserting specific cultural references as he worked; only later did he recognize family and culture in some of the season’s imagery and themes.
“I think artists are generally processing their lives through their art,” he said. That observation complements his earlier comments about childhood loss and the White Rabbit, rather than replacing them: the season-one interviews focus on trauma and empathy, while the later interview describes how family and culture can surface intuitively in creative work.

What “personal” means here—and what it does not
Shankar’s interviews support a specific reading: Dante’s story resonates with themes he has connected to his own life and artistic outlook. They do not establish that Dante is a disguised autobiography, or that every element of the show comes from a personal memory. Netflix describes the program as an animated series based on Capcom’s game IP, with Studio Mir providing the animation; its official series page lists an April 2025 premiere.
For viewers, that distinction leaves room for both parts of the adaptation to matter. Dante comes from an existing game franchise, while Shankar’s interpretation places childhood loss, moral ambiguity, and the possibility of healing at the center of this series’ emotional perspective.
