Daniel Johns has said he does not want to reform Silverchair—not because he is ashamed of the band’s music, but because its identity and the prospect of returning to it are emotionally difficult for him. He has also drawn a distinction between playing with former bandmates and performing under Silverchair’s name.
Why does Daniel Johns say he won’t reunite with Silverchair?
In 2021, while discussing the podcast Who Is Daniel Johns?, Johns rejected the idea of a reunion in emphatic terms. PerthNow reported him saying, “I wouldn’t even get Silverchair back together for a million dollars with a gun to my head.” In the same interview, he clarified that his refusal was not a rejection of the band’s work: “It’s not that I am not proud of it, but for some reason I don’t want it around.” PerthNow’s 2021 report gives the clearest summary of that position.

Johns gave a more personal explanation in an appearance on The Project, reported by ABC Double J. He connected Silverchair’s early fame and intense attention from fans with a lasting emotional toll, saying, “It’s just that it’s emotionally triggering for me.” He also spoke about needing years of therapy to become internally happy. Those are Johns’ descriptions of his own experience, not a clinical assessment. ABC Double J’s account places the comments in that context.
Did he rule out playing with Ben Gillies and Chris Joannou?
No. Johns’ position was more specific than “I never want to make music with them.” In 2022, he said he had invited Silverchair drummer Ben Gillies and bassist Chris Joannou to play on his solo track “Reclaim Your Heart.” As MusicRadar reported, Johns wanted to play with them “for the feeling,” but did not want to perform “under the banner of Silverchair.” Gillies and Joannou declined, and Johns recorded the drums himself. MusicRadar’s report on the track captures the distinction: working with former bandmates was conceivable to him; reviving the band identity was not.
Do the former members agree about Silverchair’s future?
The former members have expressed different views about their relationships and the possibility of reconciliation. ABC’s 2023 Australian Story retrospective describes creative divergence, difficult touring and strained relationships through accounts from members and associates, rather than offering one definitive explanation for the split. Gillies said he and Johns did not have a relationship and that he wished they could talk. He also said, “In my mind, Silverchair is done.” Joannou, by contrast, expressed hope for reconciliation. ABC’s retrospective makes clear that these are separate perspectives, not a shared reunion plan.

What is known about the band’s timeline?
Silverchair split in 2011, according to MusicRadar. ABC’s Australian Story reports that the band’s last performance together was in Darwin in 2010. Their 1995 debut, Frogstomp, is a useful starting point for listeners revisiting the group’s work; check the edition and current availability if you are looking for a physical copy. MusicRadar reports that Silverchair had sold more than 10 million albums worldwide, while ABC Double J identifies Frogstomp as the 1995 debut.

The directly reported statements described above are from 2021 and 2022, with the 2023 documentary providing later perspectives from former members. A 2026 SEN search result mentioned discussion of a possible Grand Final performance, but the page redirected when opened. That snippet does not establish a confirmed booking, an official Silverchair reunion announcement or a new statement from Johns. The available verified comments therefore support describing his stated position in those interviews—not treating it as a guarantee of what he or the other members may do in the future.
