Cindy Crawford later said that differences in age and life stage, along with an uneven relationship dynamic, contributed to the end of her marriage to Richard Gere. But the published highlights of her 2015 appearance on The Howard Stern Show do not show her explaining their breakup. The available official rundown is not a full transcript, so it cannot establish whether Gere came up elsewhere in the broadcast.
What the Howard Stern rundown says
The official Howard Stern Show page for Crawford’s September 28, 2015 appearance presents the interview as taking place ahead of the release of her memoir, Becoming. Its selected highlights cover her career, business decisions, Playboy, Vogue and George Clooney—not her relationship with Gere or the reason it ended. Read the show’s published rundown.
That is a limit on what the page documents, not proof that Gere was never mentioned in the full broadcast. The page points listeners to the show, but the available material is not a complete transcript.
What Crawford later said about the relationship
They were at different stages of life
In a 2013 interview reported by British Vogue, Crawford said she was 22 when she and Gere met, while he was 37. She described herself as still discovering who she was and what she wanted, while Gere was further along in life. “I think a lot of what happened with Richard and I was that I was still 22 and at 22 – as a young woman – I was kind of still figuring out who I was and what I wanted to be and he was already 37,” she said. Crawford added that she had believed she was fully formed, but was still growing and changing. In her account, she did not want to hear that from Gere at the time because, as she put it, at 22 “you think you know everything.” These are her retrospective reflections on a relationship, not proof of one definitive cause for the divorce.
She questioned whether they had been peers
In remarks reported by Italian news agency ANSA in 2016, Crawford said she was unsure whether they had ever been friends as equals: she was young, and he was Richard Gere. The report says she described them as friendly by then, though they did not see each other often. Its headline phrase, “Richard Gere? Come uno sconosciuto per me,” can be rendered as “Richard Gere? Like a stranger to me”; that is an English rendering of ANSA’s Italian report, not a verified English-language transcript. Read ANSA’s report, published February 9, 2016.

What can be concluded about the breakup claim
Crawford’s later comments point to a mismatch in age and life stage, and to a relationship in which she felt young beside a famous, established partner. They do not establish a single, exhaustive explanation for why the marriage ended. The official Stern highlights do not substantiate the claim that she revealed that explanation on his show; whether the full broadcast included a brief exchange about Gere remains unresolved.
