His brief announcement did not explain the full story. In an April 2025 interview, Landon said Melissa Barrera’s firing, the collapse of the film he had planned, and the abuse and threats he said he received all contributed to his decision.
When did Christopher Landon leave Scream VII?
Landon said he had formally exited the film weeks before announcing it publicly on December 23, 2023. In the post reproduced by TheWrap and reported by the Los Angeles Times, he described the job as “a dream job that turned into a nightmare,” said his heart broke for everyone involved, and said it was time to move on. He did not give a detailed explanation in that announcement.
What did Landon later say about his decision?
In an interview published by Vanity Fair on April 8, 2025, Landon said Spyglass told him it was firing Melissa Barrera. He said the film he had planned “all came tumbling down in an instant” after her removal and described the cancellation of everything as devastating. Landon also stressed that he had no control over the firing: “I did not fire her. A lot of people think I had something to do with it, and it was not my doing. I had no control of the situation at all.”
Landon said he was blamed for the cast upheaval and that he and his family received threats. He said he chose not to continue because of the abuse and because he no longer wanted to give part of himself to the project: “The hate and abuse really spoiled it for me, and I lost my love for the idea of going forward.” These are Landon’s retrospective statements in the 2025 interview; the reviewed reporting does not independently document the threats or his account of the FBI’s involvement.

How did Barrera’s and Jenna Ortega’s departures relate to Landon’s?
Barrera’s removal and Ortega’s departure came before Landon’s public announcement, but they were separate events and should not be confused with his exit. The Los Angeles Times reported that Spyglass dropped Barrera after she shared pro-Palestinian comments online. TheWrap reported that Ortega’s exit was said to involve scheduling conflicts and that she had left before the news became public. Neither actor’s departure was caused by Landon’s later decision to leave.
Barrera and Ortega played sisters in Scream VI, as noted by the Los Angeles Times. After Landon left, Kevin Williamson took over directing Scream VII, according to Vanity Fair.
