In September 2019, Chiranjeevi advised Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan not to enter politics, warning that the experience could bring defeat, disappointment and humiliation. Contemporary reports traced the remarks to an interview with Tamil magazine Ananda Vikatan, published while Chiranjeevi was promoting Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy.
What Chiranjeevi said about entering politics
In a September 27, 2019, report, The Times of India attributed the advice to Chiranjeevi, who said he had entered politics as a leading Telugu film star and left his previous position behind. The report rendered one of his remarks in English as: “When I entered politics I was the number one superstar in Telugu and I left everything behind.”
He recalled losing in his own constituency and said he believed his rival had spent substantial money to defeat him. That is Chiranjeevi’s account of his experience, not independently established evidence about election spending. He also pointed to the defeat of his brother, Pawan Kalyan, and described politics as a field where people must be prepared for setbacks.
The same report attributed this warning to him: “to be in politics, you need to face defeat, disappointment and humiliation. If you can do the above, maybe things will change someday for you.” He said he had expected Kamal Haasan’s party to do well in the 2019 election, but still concluded with advice to both actors: “Don’t enter politics.”

Why the advice was aimed at Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan
Chiranjeevi’s reported comments addressed two actors whose political paths differed at the time. Kamal Haasan had contested in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections; Rajinikanth had not yet launched a political party, according to The Times of India. Those details describe the 2019 context, not either actor’s present political position.
A September 27 report by Scroll also traced the warning to the Ananda Vikatan interview. The quotations carried in English-language coverage should be understood as the outlets’ English renderings: the original interview was not available to verify its exact wording, full question-and-answer context or translation nuances.

The separate NDTV interview from September 28
Chiranjeevi’s remarks also appeared in a distinct interview published by NDTV on September 28, 2019, during promotion for Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy. NDTV’s video interview summary says he discussed why Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan should stay away from politics while Pawan Kalyan should continue in it.
That interview is separate from the Ananda Vikatan conversation behind the September 27 reports. The distinction matters: the NDTV summary describes another conversation and its framing, rather than supplying the original interview or establishing the exact wording of the advice reported the previous day.
