Bull ended after six seasons because star Michael Weatherly publicly chose to leave, saying he wanted new creative challenges and to bring Dr. Jason Bull’s story to a close. CBS confirmed the sixth season would be the last, but its reported statement did not give a specific ratings, cost or other business reason. The earlier controversy involving Weatherly and Eliza Dushku is important context, but the available reporting does not establish it as the cause of the 2022 ending.
What happened when Bull ended?
Bull premiered in 2016, with Weatherly playing Dr. Jason Bull, head of the fictional Trial Analysis Corporation. The series drew on the idea of using psychology, intuition and data to understand trial participants, and was inspired by Dr. Phil McGraw’s early career, according to TV Insider’s contemporaneous report.
On January 18, 2022, Weatherly announced he would leave after six seasons. CBS confirmed that season six would be the show’s final run and praised the series, cast and audience. CBS announced on March 30 that the finale would air May 26; its May 9 notice identified the episode, “Goodbye,” as the final installment. CBS’s finale announcement described a negligent-homicide defense with consequences for the company and its characters. CBS News later confirmed that season six was the last and that the finale aired in May.
Did Michael Weatherly quit the show?
Weatherly presented the departure as his decision. In the announcement reproduced by TV Insider, he wrote: “I’ve decided it’s time to pursue new creative challenges and bring his story to a close.” That is the clearest public explanation for why the series reached its end after six seasons.

CBS’s accompanying statement called Bull “a ratings winner” and praised its take on the judicial process. That description is CBS’s characterization, not an independently verified ratings finding. The network confirmed a final season but did not cite ratings, production costs or scheduling as the reason for ending the series.
Was Bull canceled because of the Eliza Dushku controversy?
The controversy is relevant background, but the cited reporting does not show that it caused the 2022 ending. In 2019, former cast member Eliza Dushku said Weatherly made sexualized comments and that she was written out after confronting him. TIME reported Weatherly apologized for comments he said were inappropriate and that CBS confirmed a settlement with Dushku. These are reported claims, a response and a settlement—not, by themselves, a legal finding about the allegations.

That same year, CBS entertainment chief Kelly Kahl defended renewing Bull, saying the network was comfortable bringing it back after considering the situation. TVLine reported the settlement as $9.5 million, describing it as the amount Dushku would have earned had she become a series regular for four additional seasons. The renewal defense and settlement belong to the 2019 controversy; neither establishes why CBS ended the series three years later.
Do ratings explain the ending?
The figures reported in coverage do not establish a ratings-based reason for ending Bull. TV Insider gave an average of 7.42 million viewers in its January 2022 article, but the passage did not specify the measurement window or methodology. That figure cannot, on its own, demonstrate CBS’s motive.

TVLine’s 2019 report described season three as averaging 6.7 million viewers and a 0.75 Live+Same Day demo rating, down 40% from season two and 12th among CBS’s 14 in-season dramas in the demo. Those are season-three figures, not season-six performance data. The cited record does not provide season-six ratings or costs sufficient to identify an internal business rationale.

- Weatherly said he chose to leave after six seasons to pursue new creative challenges and conclude Jason Bull’s story.
- CBS confirmed season six would be the final season and scheduled the finale for May 26, 2022.
- CBS’s reported statement praised the show but did not disclose a specific financial, ratings or scheduling reason for ending it.
- The 2019 controversy and CBS’s defense of the earlier renewal do not prove the controversy caused the 2022 conclusion.
Accordingly, “CBS canceled Bull” is an incomplete shorthand: the public explanation began with Weatherly’s decision to leave, while CBS chose to conclude the show with season six. The available statements do not reveal whether undisclosed business considerations also informed that outcome.
