The romance was Indiscreet (1958), but the claim that Cary Grant “refused” to make it without Ingrid Bergman goes further than the available account supports. Turner Classic Movies says Grant initially wanted either Bergman or Deborah Kerr for the female lead; after Bergman accepted her 1956 Oscar for Anastasia and he saw the audience’s warm response, she became his only choice.
Which Cary Grant romance was it?
It was Indiscreet, Stanley Donen’s 1958 romantic comedy, not Alfred Hitchcock’s Notorious (1946). In Indiscreet, Grant plays Philip Adams, a diplomat who pretends to be married to protect his bachelor status. Bergman plays Anna Kalman, a London stage actress who becomes involved with him. The film adapts Norman Krasna’s play Kind Sir. Paramount’s film page lists it as a comedy with a 100-minute runtime.

What does the casting story actually say?
Turner Classic Movies’ production history says Grant loved the story on the condition that either Deborah Kerr or Ingrid Bergman could be cast as the female lead. TCM says Bergman became his only choice after Grant accepted her 1956 Academy Award for Anastasia and saw the audience’s warm reception. That account supports a strong preference and a final choice; it does not document an ultimatum or say he refused to make the film without her. Nor is “Bergman was his only choice” a direct quotation from Grant: it is TCM’s narration.
Why was the reunion notable?
Grant and Bergman had already appeared together in Notorious, the 1946 espionage romance directed by Alfred Hitchcock. TCM describes Indiscreet as their first reunion since that hit; the AFI Catalog entry for Notorious records Grant and Bergman among its stars.

#1 Best Overall
- Indiscreet (Blu Ray B)
The films put their screen pairing to different uses. In Notorious, romance intersects with a dangerous espionage assignment. In Indiscreet, the romantic deception is the engine of sophisticated comedy: Adams’s false claim that he is married shapes his relationship with Anna. TCM credits Indiscreet with helping cement Bergman’s comeback and showing her comic ability.

TCM’s account of Notorious says principal photography ran from October 1945 to February 1946. It also explains that Hitchcock designed the famous Grant–Bergman kissing scene around potential censor objections to long, passionate kisses: the couple’s food-and-phone conversation kept the scene moving while allowing them to kiss. That production anecdote helps explain the earlier partnership, but it is not evidence for Grant’s later casting preference.
