Captain America: Brave New World has a wider gap between its critics’ and audience scores than its opening-weekend numbers suggested—but those figures measure different things at different times. Rotten Tomatoes’ page, checked October 4, 2026, showed a 46% Tomatometer from 368 critic reviews and a 75% Popcornmeter from 10,000-plus verified ratings. At opening weekend in February 2025, the Associated Press reported a 51% Rotten Tomatoes critic score, an 80% verified audience score and a B- CinemaScore. Those are separate snapshots, not directly interchangeable grades.
The disagreement is easier to understand as a clash of expectations: critics often focused on whether the film worked as a self-contained story and delivered on its political premise, while favorable reactions could put more weight on Anthony Mackie, action, Harrison Ford and familiar Marvel spectacle. These are documented review themes, not a claim that every critic or viewer judged the film the same way.
What the scores do—and do not—show
Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer and Popcornmeter are percentages of counted reviews or ratings that meet the platform’s positive threshold; they are not average star ratings. The film’s current snapshot is 46% from 368 critic reviews and 75% from 10,000-plus verified audience ratings, according to the Rotten Tomatoes film page checked October 4, 2026. Scores and counts can change.
The opening-weekend numbers were higher on both Rotten Tomatoes measures: the AP reported 51% from critics and an 80% verified audience score on February 17, 2025. The B- CinemaScore reported that weekend came from opening-weekend polling; it is not a Rotten Tomatoes score or a later cumulative audience rating. The different dates and methods matter when describing the size of the divide.

- As he takes on the mantle of Captain America, Sam Wilson soon finds himself in the middle of an international incident. Why critics and audiences could respond differently
1. Critics judged the film as a standalone story
Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus credits Mackie with capably taking up Captain America’s mantle but says the film is too routine and too crowded with Easter eggs to work as a worthwhile standalone adventure. That points to a difference in what viewers may value: familiar franchise connections can be a pleasure for some, while critics assessing this installment on its own may see them as distractions.
2. The political premise raised expectations
The story’s political setup invited viewers to expect more than superhero conflict. In a February 14, 2025 review, The Atlantic argued that the film did not meaningfully explore that premise. For critics looking for political ideas to shape the story, the gap between setup and execution could feel especially conspicuous.
3. Action could matter more than plot for some viewers
Rotten Tomatoes’ first-review roundup includes praise for fight sequences and grounded choreography, alongside criticism of the story. A viewer who mainly wanted brisk superhero action could come away satisfied even if the plot felt familiar; a reviewer who put narrative originality first could weigh the same trade-off differently.

In a race against time, Sam must unravel a nefarious global plot before the true mastermind has the entire world seeing red. Warning: Some flashing-lights scenes in this film may affect photosensitive viewers.
4. Mackie’s performance was a point of agreement, not a cure-all
The critics consensus explicitly describes Anthony Mackie as capable in the role. A strong lead performance can help make a film engaging, but it does not necessarily overcome objections to plotting, pacing or the way the story uses its premise.
5. Harrison Ford and Red Hulk offered recognizable spectacle
Reviewers in Rotten Tomatoes’ roundup discussed Harrison Ford’s performance and the Red Hulk set piece as attractions. Those elements can give audiences memorable star presence and spectacle, even for people less concerned with whether the film’s story is especially distinctive.
6. MCU continuity could reward some viewers and burden others
References and connective lore are double-edged. They can make a Marvel installment feel part of a larger world, but critics may find that a film leans too heavily on callbacks instead of developing its own story. Rotten Tomatoes’ consensus calls out Easter eggs, while The Atlantic argues that earlier MCU storylines weigh on this one.

- Steve Rogers wields the shield in Captain America: The First Avenger, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War. Then it?s Sam Wilson who unleashes his wings and takes up the mantle in Captain America: Brave New World. Join them as they fight evil global forces with this action-packed 4-movie set.
7. Sam Wilson’s transition came with existing expectations
The film did not introduce Sam Wilson’s Captain America in a vacuum. The Atlantic noted that character groundwork had already been covered in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Viewers familiar with that series could bring expectations about Sam’s development; critics could also question what this movie adds rather than repeats.
8. Its grounded tone did not land uniformly
Rotten Tomatoes’ review roundup records disagreement over whether the film’s grounded approach works. A more restrained style can feel like a welcome change from cosmic-scale superhero spectacle to one viewer and underwhelming to another. The reviews do not establish a single shared audience response to the tone.
9. Opening polling and later ratings capture different moments
The AP’s February 17, 2025 report put the opening-weekend verified audience score at 80% and the CinemaScore at B-. The Rotten Tomatoes page checked October 4, 2026 showed a 75% Popcornmeter. One is an opening-weekend poll result, another is a platform rating snapshot with more than 10,000 verified ratings; they are not duplicate measurements of the same group at the same time.

10. Reshoots became part of the conversation, but do not prove the cause
Director Julius Onah discussed how production evolved, and Rotten Tomatoes reported material written for reshoots and the integration of the character Sidewinder. That establishes production changes, not that reshoots caused the film’s reception gap or made its finished story feel disjointed. The available reporting does not demonstrate that causal link.

The AP reported a North American opening weekend of $88.5 million, based on studio estimates, and said exit polls found that 63% of the opening-weekend audience were men. Those figures provide commercial and demographic context; they do not explain why any viewer liked or disliked the film. The audience composition should not be used as a shortcut for inferring taste.
Overall, the split is best read as a difference in emphasis rather than a single mystery with one answer. The reviews point to a film whose action, performances and Marvel familiarity could satisfy some viewers, while its routine plotting, continuity burden and underdeveloped political angle disappointed critics seeking a more independent and ambitious story.
