Bryan Kohberger’s sentence took effect on July 23, 2025, and the court ordered him moved into state custody immediately. He was not taken to a prison cell that day, because moving a sentenced prisoner from county custody into the state corrections system involves a delivery step and then an intake assessment before a housing placement is set. By July 25, 2025, Idaho corrections officials had confirmed he was at Idaho Maximum Security Institution in Kuna. The reporting covered here dates from July 2025 and does not establish where he is held today.
What the judgment ordered
The Idaho court judgment, dated July 23, 2025, is the controlling document for the timing question. Judge Steven Hippler imposed the following:

- Four consecutive fixed life sentences without parole, one for each murder.
- A consecutive fixed 10-year term for burglary.
- A statement that the sentences commenced immediately.
- Credit for 937 days of custody served as of July 23, 2025.
- A custody direction remanding him to the Ada County Sheriff for delivery into the custody of the Director of the State Board of Correction.
The direction is stated in the judgment as follows: “Defendant shall be remanded to the custody of the Sheriff of Ada County, to be delivered FORTHWITH by him into the custody of the Director of the State Board of Correction of the State of Idaho.”
The distinction matters. The sentence began on July 23. What followed was the physical handover and the processing that comes with it. A headline saying he would not immediately go to prison describes that processing gap, not a delayed start to the sentence.

Four stages the headline runs together
Most confusion comes from treating sentencing, transfer, and placement as a single event. They are separate steps, and the reporting dates each one differently.
| Stage | What happened | Timing | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Sentence and legal start | Four consecutive life terms without parole and a consecutive 10-year burglary term; sentences commenced immediately; 937 days of credit applied | July 23, 2025 | Idaho court judgment |
| 2. Delivery to state custody | Ada County Sheriff ordered to deliver him forthwith to the Director of the State Board of Correction | Ordered July 23, 2025; the reporting does not give a separate date for the physical handover | Idaho court judgment |
| 3. Needs assessment and placement | Intake assessment before placement; officials said it could take seven to 14 days; he was reported to be isolated during this period for safety | Intake expected to begin Thursday, July 24, 2025, per a July 23 report; the 7 to 14 day range was given to ABC News by officials | People report (republished by AOL), July 23, 2025; ABC News, July 25, 2025 |
| 4. Confirmed facility | Idaho Maximum Security Institution, Kuna, as confirmed by the Idaho Department of Correction | Reported by July 25, 2025 | ABC News, July 25, 2025 |
Why early coverage said he would not go straight to prison
A People report published July 23, 2025, and republished by AOL, said intake would likely begin the next day, Thursday, July 24. The same report described a possible out-of-state placement as something to be decided case by case. No out-of-state placement was reported as decided. The headline’s wording was a fair forecast of processing on the day it was written. By July 25 it no longer described his situation, because ABC News reported that the Idaho Department of Correction had sent him to Idaho Maximum Security Institution.

What the seven-to-14-day assessment covers
ABC News reported, citing officials, that “Before Kohberger is placed, his needs will be assessed in a process that can take between seven and 14 days.” The estimate is specific to this case and should be read with three limits in mind.
What it measures
- The needs assessment that happens before a placement decision is made.
- A range, not a fixed figure.
- A period during which officials said he would be isolated for safety.
What it does not measure
- The full time between sentencing and arrival at a prison. The estimate covers assessment before placement, not the handover from county custody.
- A statewide rule. It was reported as the process for this prisoner, not as an Idaho statute or a standard transfer timeline.
- A typical wait for other sentenced prisoners. The reporting does not include an independently sourced average for how long transfer from sentencing takes in Idaho, so no general figure is offered here.
Where he was reported, and what is not established
The confirmed location in the reporting is Idaho Maximum Security Institution in Kuna, as of July 25, 2025. That is the most recent placement the available sources document. Readers should note the following:

- Later changes to housing or classification would not appear in July 2025 coverage.
Why parole is not part of the timeline
Idaho Attorney General Raúl Labrador, in a July 2025 statement on the sentence, said: “Under Idaho law, the fixed prison sentences mean Kohberger will never be eligible for parole.” The fixed life terms mean the length of his imprisonment is not subject to a parole review, which is why the reporting treats the sentence as final once it begins.

Kohberger pleaded guilty to four murders and burglary under a plea agreement. The sentence was imposed on July 23, 2025. He declined to speak at sentencing, according to the Associated Press. CBS News reported at the time that his motive remained unknown, and no source here establishes a reason for it. The factors that determined the transfer timing were the court’s custody direction and the state’s intake process, not anything specific to the murder counts.

For readers following the case, the July 2025 court judgment and the agency statements are the primary documents. Coverage published later should be checked against them for changes in custody.
