Brooks Ayers said he fabricated documents to support his public claims about having cancer because he wanted to quiet doubts surrounding the diagnosis while keeping his actual medical records and private health history out of public view. He also said he acted alone and that Vicki Gunvalson did not know he had fabricated the documents.
What Brooks Ayers said about fabricating the documents
In a statement reported by Bravo on November 11, 2015, Ayers acknowledged fabricating documents to “prove” his cancer diagnosis to the public. He called his conduct “wrong and inexcusable” and said he did it for a reality-TV storyline, hoping to put the doubts about his cancer to rest.
Ayers said he did not want to disclose his actual medical records or private medical history. That was his explanation for producing false documents rather than sharing his records; it does not establish every motive that others proposed at the time.
Did Vicki Gunvalson know?
Ayers said he acted alone and without Gunvalson’s knowledge. Gunvalson, for her part, said she had believed him, though she sometimes had doubts, including questions about his changing doctors. After his admission, she said she felt duped and denied knowingly participating in a scam. These are their respective public accounts; neither statement establishes when Gunvalson may have known more than she said publicly.

What was happening before the admission?
Before the admission, Ayers told E! News that his cancer was “improving,” describing a change from an initial stage 3 diagnosis to stage 2. In a November 3 report, Bravo said Ayers later characterized that description as a misstatement: he said he meant his numbers were improving and that a physician assistant had told him cancer stage does not decline in that way. This is a chronology of his public explanations, not an independent medical assessment.
Bravo also reported that a City of Hope spokesperson said Ayers had not received cancer treatment at the facility in Duarte, California. That report concerns treatment at that facility; it does not, by itself, establish a broader conclusion about his health.

Which RHOC episode covers the interview?
The interview is featured in Brooks Tells All, The Real Housewives of Orange County Season 10, Episode 23. Bravo describes the November 12, 2015 special as a half-hour program built around Andy Cohen’s sit-down with Ayers. Cohen addressed cast members’ allegations about Ayers’s health, why he avoided seeing Shannon’s doctor, differing accounts of his treatment with Gunvalson, and the suggestion that announcing the diagnosis might have been an attempt to repair his public image. Those were subjects raised in the special, not established explanations for Ayers’s actions. Bravo’s episode page identifies the episode and its air date.
Apple TV lists the episode with a November 12, 2015 release date and a 21-minute runtime. The listings describe the same episode differently on runtime; availability may vary by region, so check the service listing for your location.
