The action followed the 2023 controversy over Sabrina Carpenter filming her “Feather” music video in the church, but the later restrictions also reflected broader administrative and financial findings—not the video alone.
What happened to Monsignor Jamie Gigantiello?
On November 18–19, 2024, Bishop Robert Brennan announced that Gigantiello had been relieved of pastoral oversight and governance at Our Lady of Mount Carmel–Annunciation Parish in Brooklyn. The Diocese of Brooklyn appointed Bishop Witold Mroziewski as parish administrator, with authority over the parish. Brennan said investigations by Alvarez & Marsal and Sullivan & Cromwell had uncovered serious violations of diocesan policies and protocols. Associated Press reporting and the CBS News report covered the announcement.
How the church filming controversy began
In September 2023, a film crew sought permission to shoot at the parish. In a later letter to parishioners, Gigantiello said he approved filming after reviewing the participants, but did not anticipate the final content. Sabrina Carpenter’s “Feather” video, which included scenes filmed inside the Brooklyn church, was released on October 31, 2023. The Diocese said proper procedures for filming had not been followed. Gigantiello apologized and accepted responsibility for allowing the shoot. NBC News reported on the filming dispute and apology.
What the later diocesan investigation found
Unauthorized parish-fund transfers
Brennan said Gigantiello made unauthorized transfers of parish money to accounts affiliated with Frank Carone, a former chief of staff to New York City Mayor Eric Adams. The Associated Press reported that $1.9 million was transferred between 2019 and 2021. According to the AP’s account of the bishop’s statement, Carone’s law firm repaid $1 million plus interest, and the Diocese requested repayment of the remainder. These are reported diocesan findings and repayment details, not a criminal conviction.

Church credit-card expenses
Brennan also said an investigation into substantial personal expenses charged to a church credit card was ongoing when he announced the restrictions. That inquiry had not been described as resolved in the cited reporting.
What is—and is not—established about the federal inquiry
The AP reported that federal investigators had subpoenaed the church for information. At the time of that report, neither Gigantiello nor Carone had been accused of wrongdoing in connection with the federal inquiry. A subpoena is not itself proof of wrongdoing, and the cited reporting does not establish a criminal adjudication against either man.

Why the video and the 2024 action should not be conflated
The Diocese’s 2023 response concerned the filming process and Gigantiello’s decision to permit the shoot. The November 2024 action came after a broader administrative investigation that identified other policy violations, including the reported parish-fund transfers, while the credit-card review remained ongoing. The chronology connects the controversy and later inquiry, but the available reports do not say the video alone caused every restriction imposed in 2024.
The cited reports establish the November 2024 appointment and restrictions; they do not verify Gigantiello’s or the parish’s later status or the eventual outcomes of the related inquiries.
